One thing I find frustrating with Hasbro is that they don't seem to have a good grasp on which older tooling is still viable today, and which tooling needs to be destroyed with prejudice. I sense that they want to use a date parameter to draw a line below which all sculpts are unfit for the Vintage Collection, and above which all sculpts are viable repack candidates. Only the Sith deal in absolutes. This doesn't work, but to know this, you need to be a collector. You need to be intimately familiar with the sculpts, have spent time posing them, and set them up in displays. Collectors also know which characters need modern articulation (all of the main characters, duelists and troopers) and which do not (background fodder).
The Hasbro Star Wars Brand team is not made up of super hardcore collectors…and so what? I think that's a silly argument the community makes against them. I want them to be good businesspeople, designers, sculptors and artists long before I need "hardcore collector" on their resume. All they need to do is listen to the hardcore collectors. With respect to Legacy Collection repacks, I don't feel like they have been doing a very good job of hearing the pleas. In the recent Victoria's Cantina SDCC 2022 Q&A, a bit of a bombshell was dropped. The tooling for those 2008-2009 figures has not been lost. That is the good news, but the flip side is that fans have been begging for some of those figures to be re-released because the secondary market prices are astronomical. This can have the effect of making the fans feel ignored. These figures are either key to popular dioramas or popular in their own right, but are too inaccessible. Collectors need your help, Hasbro. If you have the assets, you would make a lot of fans happy by providing that help.
The quality of the original sculpt, combined with what these respective figures need to do, makes the following figures perfectly acceptable repack candidates in 2022 and beyond. The only one pushing the boundaries is Tarados Gon. He is a Jedi, but the character is mostly notably seen just standing in the Survivors Circle. Finally, please note that this article cuts off at 2009, otherwise it would be too long. The entirety of the Toys R Us exclusive EU wave from 2010 needs to be re-released, but again, that's a subject for another day.
