Star Wars: Droids Review, Episode 7

Posted by Dustin on 03/03/18 at 07:05 AM Category: Droids Review

So, a couple of things to start out. This episode isn't great. And I have to admit that while I was watching it, Scrubs was on really loud in the other room, so I may have conflated some of the plot points. We're getting to the point with this show that getting captured in every episode is starting to get boring. That's not to say there weren't some good moments here, it would just be nice to flip the script every once and awhile.

So Mon Julpa is out of fuel and Jann and Jess have a plan to sneak some onto the planet past some pirates. Their plan is foiled when Kybo Ren boards their ship and takes them all prisoner. He plans to feed Jann to some kind of Loch Ness monster. The cool thing here is that they use a skiff. While the skiff is not a Sail Barge, it's still cool to see. R2 uses his hidden oxygen mask to save Jann. Also, the droids can swim, I'm not saying they shouldn't be able to swim, it's just oddly jarring. If someone had asked me if C-3PO could swim, I would have said, "No, you idiot."

After escaping the monster, they overtake some fishing henchmen and steal their clothes. So C-3PO and R2-D2 are wearing henchman disguises. This is ridiculous. Nobody would be fooled by this, and it's not even a plot point. They just wear them for awhile and as soon as they see anyone, the clothes fall off anyway. After some hijinks, a nifty boat race ensues. Meanwhile Jessica Meade easily fools Kybo to escape, and rescues her friends. The group doesn't make it far, despite the great plan of cramming Jann, C-3PO and R2-D2 into the cockpit of an A-Wing. It turns out Kybo has a stolen Imperial Star Destroyer. At least that's what they say it is. It really doesn't look like any Star Destroyer I've ever seen. Now Kybo has a clear shot to destroy Mon Julpa's fuel delivery, only it was all a trick! They pulled an Ocean's 12 on poor Kybo. Which is to say a very convoluted plan where they accomplished their goal before the story even started.

Even so, Mon Julpa's A-Wings are no match for the Star Destroyer. Clearly these people have never played the old computer game, X-Wing. Taking down a Star Destroyer with an A-Wing is a very satisfying experience. In order to get out of this mess, R2 does his plug-in thing and loads some missiles backwards. According to C-3PO's expository dialog, this will destroy the Star Destroyer. Easy-peezy, they load back into the A-Wing and get on out of there. The episode ends, like most things, with a celebratory bath.

A lot happened here, but it was all very silly. Especially the part when Dr. Cox started yelling at everyone.

Best Moment: (10:58) I know it's stupid and predictable, but the bit where C-3PO mistook a bearded guy for Jessica Meade was the highlight for me.

Most WTF Moment: So many to pick from. (4:48) C-3PO has his second elevator-related mishap of the episode; Or the end when everyone watching the droids in the bath with R2's bath toys?
