First of all, we've been remiss to have not pointed this out earlier. While we are nearing the end of the Winter Olympics, there was something VERY Banthaskullian afoot early in The Games: Crotchgate!
Yes, there was a cheating scandal heading into these Winter Olympics in which some nations were taking steps to illegally enlarge the crotches of ski jumping suits, which apparently is the prime way to add fabric which creates additional lift while soaring through the air, and presumably increases the landing distance.
What a time to be alive! Crotches being the difference between medaling and going home empty handed is the greatest thing since VC01 Dengar came with a removable crotch!
Anyway, yesterday the Mos Eisley Set finally went up for sale on Pulse at 1pm ET. The set contains 4 OT Glups (well, 3). And as we've all discussed for months, the set isn't ideal - for various reasons to various collectors. It has two debut characters and two re-dos. It has 2 characters that are seen inside the Cantina, one that is seen outside, and one that isn't seen anywhere in film, and only briefly in a comic or two. And while most (not all) collectors would probably agree that Arleil is the star of the set, many of those same collectors would have to admit it was a bit anticlimactic after the Haslab miss and the less-than-perfect reveal of the set.
I want more Glups, particularly (but not exclusively) from the OT scenes that are anchored by Haslabs. And yet, I spent my $75 on only 1.5 figures from this set: Arleil and half-heartedly on Labria - because his POTF2 figure is pretty terrible. I could care less about Garindan, since we have a decent enough one already (and I'm quite annoyed that new tooling investment went into making a new one), and I had zero point zero interest in Chalmun. But that's just me. I know that collectors purchasing this set run the gamut as to why they are interested, and in the end, that's a great thing. Because we pretty much share a common thread - love of world-building!
The allotment on Pulse (US) sold out in three and half hours. There are also quantities available outside the US. And while it is assumed that additional inventory will be available on Shop Disney, it's also a pretty safe bet that more will show up on Pulse at some point soon. So "sold out" is a term that is probably overstating things a bit.
But there's no other way to slice this: It's a success for OT Glups and a victory for world-building of the One True Scale. As Chris mentioned in his recent article, I've been lamenting the dangerous drifting of TVC away from the world-building aspect that makes 3.75" Star Wars the true king of action figure collecting. There is no better way to confirm that this is what collectors demand than by scooping up thousands of sets of OT Glups in a few short hours.
TVC would be well-served by providing more of this, and less of whatever can be found at Ollies.
