Two Jerks Now Accepting Pitches for Anthology Film #3

Three leading candidates in the non-binding fan speculation discussion

Disney has not yet revealed the subject of the next Anthology Film. Most fan speculation is centered around either Darth Vader, Boba Fett, or Obi-Wan. We're pitching our winning storylines here.

Darth Vader

Bret
Nothing particularly original here. I think we're looking in the right place if we get a Vader as Palpatine's enforcer.

Vader travels the galaxy with his 501st troops as he brings uncooperative star systems to heel. Vader uncovers a plot to assassinate the Emperor by a renegade group of imperial officers, but unbeknownst to him they are assisted by some like-minded Imperial senators, including Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and Garm Bel Iblis as well as an exiled Jedi. Vader eventually discovers most of the officers involved in the plot, and brings them down swiftly and brutally, one by one, exacting revenge on their families. As Vader tracks down Crix Maxine, the senior officer of the mutiny from whom he plans to extract information implicating the treasonous senators using some savage Dark Side mind tricks, he is confronted by the hidden Jedi, who turns out to be Ahsoka Tano. She manages to stop Vader, allowing Maxine to escape. After a brief duel, Ahsoka also escapes. Vader is conflicted, and reports to Palpatine that he foiled the plot, but does not tell him about Ahsoka. Having survived Vader's wrath, the senators meet in secret, and officially establish the Alliance to Restore The Republic.

I'm going to pitch an idea that everyone is going to hate. I don't think the "fresh" thing here is to do a movie of Vader in black armor (just yet). For me the PT completely under-delivered on the A New Hope description of Anakin Skywalker, and I felt the "fall" of Anakin was as anticlimactic as you could get. He and Obi-Wan were supposed to good friends, but they acted like office "frenemies". The "cunning warrior" Anakin suffered amputations in two of his three on-screen saber duels. Other than some nifty spinning, this pilot, whose greatness is on a galactic scale, never showed much.

Therefore, I pitch Portents of Vader. A stand alone movie that takes place between AOTC and ROTS to smooth over the somewhat rocky PT landing for Vader and make us believe Anakin is the man we were promised in A New Hope. Make us finally feel what a tragedy Anakin's failure was.

Boba Fett

Bret
Boba Fett hones his skills by hunting big game on exotic planets, and he adopts the Bantha Skull as his emblem. He studies the ways of the ancient Mandalorians, and returns to Kamino to meet with those that helped raise him. He hates the Jedi, but distrusts the Empire. He settles in with unsavory types who rule the seedy underbelly of the Galaxy. He learns several tricks from a new mentor, and eventually joins the guild. Uninterested in even the loose rules of the guild, Fett develops his own code, and becomes bitter rivals with the likes of Bossk and IG-88, Darth Vader learns of the existence of a Jedi in exile, and enlists several bounty hunters to find him. Fett out-smarts, out-pilots, and out-duels his competitors to locate the Jedi in hiding. He reports his findings to Vader, who is impressed.

Chris
We wax silly here at Bantha Skull a lot because we're generally silly people. But the cost is that sometimes our readers inject sarcasm or silliness when there is none. The following pitch is going to have the appearance of silliness, but I assure you it's not. The Boba Fett movie should be templated on the movie Midnight Run without the comedy elements. (Inclusion of Charles Grodin is optional but recommended).

This way the audience isn't put in a position to root for a protagonistic Boba Fett over what we would traditionally consider Star Wars heroes. The audience would be rooting for Boba Fett over those other jerk Bounty Hunters (anyone who doesn't want to see some big screen IG-88 battle action is not a Star Wars fan). Plus it gives the studio an easy out to show a little morality for the protagonist that is completely in keeping with the character. Having Fett realize that claiming his bounty results in separating a child form their only parent would be something he would identify with from Geonosis, and give him reason for not following through.

I don't claim to be the originator of these particular broad strokes. I just approve of them.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Bret
Obi-Wan spends his first few years keeping a watchful eye on the Lars homestead. Qui-Gon reaches out from the beyond to tell Obi-Wan that he must recover an ancient Jedi Holocron that contains secrets to become one with Force. Obi-Wan reluctantly decides to leave Tatooine, which angers Owen and leads to their falling out. To help him stay under the radar during his journey and not be discovered by Vader, he changes his name to "Ben" Kenobi, and rubs some dirt on his robes to complete the disguise. Obi-Wan takes a winding path to his goal, needing the help of various allies along the way, including Captain Rex, Senator Bail Organa (briefly meeting a young Leia), a rebel operative named Cassian Andor, Yoda, and Qui-Gon. Eventually, his journey takes him to an ancient Jedi temple on Imperial-occupied Jedha, where he is given access to the holocron by a couple of Guardians of the Whills named Chirrut and Baze. Unbeknownst to Obi-Wan while he is deep inside the temple, he was discovered by Imperial troops, and Chirrut and Baze race to stop them from reporting their findings to their superiors (in an ironic flip of the frantic Tantive relay the rebels undertake at the end of Rogue One.). Obi-Wan returns to Tatooine to study the holocron and unlock its secrets.

Chris
Once again, this thought is neither revolutionary nor original. The Obi-Wan movie should be a take on the Magnificent Seven / The Seven Samurai. In short, from the latter, a band of seven ronin (masterless samurai) defend a village that is being victimized by bandits. Obi-Wan is on Tatooine which has the Hutts. This dovetails nicely. Of course the motivation in this case would be more altruistic, etc.

Again this idea has been kicked around since before the Disney purchase it seems. One problem is how could seven Jedi go undetected by Sith? The concept of near Jedi introduced in Rogue One allows for a convenient side step to stay under Papa Palpatine's radar. Additionally, I'm all about in-universe cheats. Star Wars has a great one: Carbonite. How about having a Jedi who survived Order 66 freezing themselves as the ultimate hiding spot from the Empire. Then Obi-Wan breaks the glass on this Jedicicle emergency plan to save the day. It's classic audience manipulation. How cool would it be to see Shaak Ti come out of nowhere to turn the tide against the Hutt's forces? It would be even better than the Knights of the Vale at the Battle of the B-Words.
