During the Sail Barge campaign, we ran a four part series on the figures of the Barge. As we now sit in the familiar summer lull between the "spring" and "fall" releases, it might be a good time to circle back on the figures you might need. The following is a roll-up of that four part series placing the figures in the context of the movie and indicating which are the definitive offerings from Hasbro.
R2-D2 (bartender) & Wooof
Wooof takes a drink off of R2's tray
Recreated with VC24 Wooof and VC25 RD-D2
I know it's difficult to tell that that is Wooof, but trust me, it's him. As he moves out of frame, you can clearly see his lamb's wool kilt. Wooof appears at other times on the barge, and even takes a shot at Luke. You can recreate this Sail Barge screenshot with two figures from wave 3 of the Vintage collection: VC24 - Wooof and VC25 - R2-D2. Neither have been re-released to date. If you need them, these are you only options:
Tessek appears to be the guy who stands too close to the piano player. Sir Elton John would not approve.
Recreated with the POTJ and POTF2 figures
This shot can be recreated from two older figures from your collection: POTJ Tessek and POTF2 Max Rebo. Tessek has never been re-released. If you need that figure, you have one option:
Max Rebo was released twice, but if you need to buy that figure I recommend the 30th Anniversary Max Rebo Band re-release since it comes with extra Sail Barge display fodder, but it's pricey:
Bib's hand can be seen pushing Leia into Jabba's corpulence
Using the VC88 - "Sandstorm" Leia and the TSC Bib Fortuna
This is a bit of a bad news/good news situation. The bad news is that if you have yet to purchase a Slave Leia figure, Disney has halted production of such product, and the secondary market prices reflect that. The good news is that if you're in on the Sail Barge, there's an outstanding chance you already have a Slave Leia figure in your collection. There are three options available to you, each with its own set of pros and cons. I prefer the "Sandstorm" Leia because of the more accurate and vibrant paint applications, but it does not come with Jabba's drinking glass. The TLC Leia comes with interchangeable seated legs:
The most recent Bib Fortuna figure comes 2006's The Saga Collection. It's woefully dated and needs an update. If you don't have one, you might want to wait it out to see if Hasbro will release a new version in The Vintage Collection. If you're impatient:
I simply used the above screen shot because it happened to grab three characters at once. I think we all have little doubt that Ree-Yees was a passenger. He can be seen HERE with Tessek and one very prominentM.I.A.F character. As for Bossk's Sail Barge bonafides, simply check the photo on his bio page on the Official Site. With respect to old Goldenrod, we actually think there are two distinct C-3PO figures that should find a home in your Sail Barge. The second one will come in part two of this feature.
If you missed out on these figures, or are just now realizing you need a second Bossk, there's good news on a couple of fronts. The Vintage Collection Bossk figure was re-released in Saga Legends and has decent availability. The Vintage Colleciton C-3PO was likewise re-released in The Black Series. The bad news is that the Black Series Ree-Yees was hard to find from the jump (but you might want to press your luck and wait for a Vintage Collection re-release).
Recreated with the TVC Boba Fett, TBS #20 Jawas and VC24 Wooof.
The Black Series Jawas are pictured above, but there have been many 3.75" scale Jawas released to date which are all decent display pieces, so the link below is to all 3.75" Jawas.
The other bartender droid most fans didn't know about until last year.
Recreated with the Entertainment Earth Bartender Droid, the TBS #20 Jawas and TSC 003 Bib Fortuna.
The good news here is that there are currently two good options for purchasing the Entertainment Earth exclusive astromech set, which includes the unnamed Jabba's bartender droid.
If you hear the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme in your head as you view this, it worked.
Here's the great news with this one. You don't have to track down that awful "Uncle Travelling Matt" POTF2 Saelt Marae figure. A brand new figure is confirmed for the Vintage Collection for 2019! You can see a gray scale preview of the figure HERE on Steve Evans' Instagram page.
Luke Skywalker, Klaatu, Woof (dead) and Gamorrean Guard (dead)
Luke is about a third of the way through his murder spree at this point.
Recreated with VC87 Luke Skywalker (Lightsaber Construction), VC21 Gamorrean Guard, VC24 Wooof and the POTF2 Klaatu.
As with Yak Face, you don't have to worry about tracking down that POTF2 Klaatu because A NEW ONE IS CONFIRMED FOR 2019! Unfortunately, this is a second Gamorrean Guard you're going to need. I believe there are five total in and on the barge.
Vizam is actually one of the most competent combatants the heroes face in the entire trilogy. He pesters the skiffs with cannon fire until Luke mows him down.
Recreated with the Black Series (Phase I) #17 Vizam figure.
For some unknown reason, that Vizam figure wasn't a fast seller at retail. Now it commands a premium. I don't know why collectors occasionally sleep on Jabba related items. They always go up.
Vader lays down the law with the annoying Salacious Cumb.
Recreated with the VC93 Darth Vader figure and the VC41 Stormtrooper figures.
What? Vader is established on the Sail Barge via a canon source? YUP! Vader and his troopers appear on the Sail Barge in the canonical Marvel Star Wars Volume 2 Issue 4. We were reminded of this fact when our very own Jimmy James reviewed the trade paper back in which that issue was collected.
That VC93 Darth Vader, which is specific to Episode IV, is one of my favorite figures of all time.
Amazing how Lucas tried to carefully replicate our figure shot and get it into the film.
The Prisoner Skiff has 7 figures that you can place on it, but it's missing two to complete the subset.
We start with VC87 Luke Skywalker (Lightsaber Construction). Chris already used this figure for the sail barge deck slaughter, but you may prefer that it exists on the prisoner skiff, since by the time Luke makes it to the deck of the barge, he's already murdered several of the figures that you'd otherwise want to display. Alternatively, you'd want two Lukes: one for the skiff and one for the barge, in order to create a composite diorama. Then we've got Han Solo. I've chosen the TSC 002 version, mostly because I couldn't find my TBS (Phase II) version. The TBS version has better articulation, but I do feel that the TSC version is a better representation of this moment. He's got dirt on his shirt (from the palace floor) and his sleeves are not rolled up when he's on the skiff. I know the Chewbacca figure here is not the correct one. Here you see the Legacy Collection BD3 figure, from the deleted scene after the Battle of Carkoon where Chewie has a bandage protecting the leg wound he sustained during the battle. But I like the look of Chewbacca with the disheveled, wind-blown hair. The bandage is hidden pretty well behind Han anyway, so I'm fine with it. If you prefer a different Chewbacca, then take your pick from the 619 versions floating out there. To round out the heroes, we have VC89 Lando Calrissian (Sandstorm Outfit), a great figure that works perfectly here.
We've got 3 bad guys as well, and all 3 of them are awesome figures. VC48 Weequay Skiffmaster, VC107 Weequay Skiff Guard, and VC56 Kithaba are all tremendous figures, and are must haves for the prisoner skiff. Note that for whatever reason, the Skiffmaster does not wield his vibroblade on the skiff. He probably wished he had it once Madman Luke goes berserk, although it wouldn't have stopped Luke's glowing green peacemaker with compass in the hilt and the thing that tells time. The skiff driver, Vedain, and sarlacc fodder, Velken Tezeri, are as yet unproduced, but would round out the full contingent.
Again, Lucas should be commended for how well he brought the figure shot below to life for the film.
These clowns don't know it yet, but they're about to experience Skywalker-style justice.
For the second skiff, there were 7 characters on board in the film. 4 of them exist in figure form. Two are great. The other two? Seen better days, Lois. Seen better days. Brock Starsher, who moonlighted as quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams back in the day, is a TBS figure and, along with VC99 Nikto (Skiff Guard), represent two awesome figures for this skiff. Hasbro also has produced a Barada figure, but it is in desperate need of an update. It was most recently repainted as TSC 004. Also existing is Pote Snitkin. He was released but a single time, as an exclusive, last century in the POTF2 Freeze Frame line. I have to say, even after some 20 years, it's really a pretty good sculpt. The figure is big, has a lot of detail, and a face not even a mother could love. Hasbro could still do much better today, of course, so a remake would be appreciated, although I would take the missing skiff guards first, and save this for last. The real problem with Mr. Snitkin is actually not his fault. The skiffs are not the right scale or proportion, so his large frame doesn't really fit in the driver's space. I crammed him in there for the purposes of the photo, but he hated every second of it. So Hasbro has 2 skiffs, but only one has a driver, and that guy can't really fit behind the controls. This needs to be addressed ASAP. Hasbro also needs to make 3 other figures to round out the crew of the second skiff.
