No Interest From Lucasfilm In Releasing Detours

Star Wars Detours was a previously green lit comedy series from Robot Chicken co-creators Seth Green and Matt Senreich. It was announced at Celebration 2012. It was to be a somewhat slapstick comedic take on the Star Wars universe. Based on the trailers shown, it seemed more juvenile and less satirical than the Robot Chicken Star Wars episodes, which are brilliant. Detours seemed like it was little more than Star Wars characters doing silly, somewhat out-of-character things, whereas Robot Chicken would comedically roast plot holes, the fandom, and squares who aren't into Star Wars. Who hasn't heard at least once non-fan older relative say, "Aluminum Falcon"? The show was ultimately canceled before it ever aired after Disney acquired Lucasfilm.

Between the eleven hundred new series announced during the Disney Investors Day in December of 2020, and the recent addition of the 80's television content to the service, Disney+ seems content starved for Star Wars. This has lead to some speculation that the 39 completed episodes of Detours would be tapped as an easy way to bolster the Star Wars offerings on the streaming service. But according to a recent interview with Seth Green in Entertainment Weekly, that is not in the plans:

"Well, there are 39 episodes that were finished for broadcast," notes Green. "But we finished them almost 10 years ago, and so there would have to be a bit of reconfiguring of the existing stuff to make it something that Disney+ would release as a Lucasfilm offering. And the way it's been explained to me is that there hasn't been enough interest high enough up to go through what it would take to put it out, and that there isn't an interest in releasing this content on Disney+ from Lucasfilm."

I support this decision. I personally felt that Detours was a potential "jump the shark" moment for Star Wars delving too heavily into self-mockery. Once a property slips too far into Batman '66 territory, the road to redemption is a long an arduous one.
