Over the last year and a half or so, Hasbro has used the celebration of LFL's 50th anniversary to check off some of the Original 96 figures with minor retools or repaints released as Walmart exclusives. While some of these have definitely been underwhelming, they did manage to fix some critical flaws on past figures like Skiff Guard Lando's short legs, and the Tusken Raider's embarrassing elbows.
He's in Star Wars now, so this is relevant.
But so far they have left some meat on that bone. One of the "easiest" O96 figures that they could knock off is the Rebel Commander. While they've given us several variants of the Hoth trench soldier, none of them has quite hit that mark in any line. The now-infamous first wave of TVC 2.0 included the clean-shaved variant of the original Legacy Collection figure and it was often the first (only?) figure from that assortment to get snatched up by collectors, despite the age of its sculpt.
This sculpt holds up fine for me, but what do I know?
And that brings us to the big question here: If Hasbro were to take that sculpt- which was excellent 13 years ago, but falls short of recent efforts- and slap on a new properly mustachioed head, would that be good enough to fill the void of the Vintage Rebel Commander? Or do we need a new trench soldier sculpt with all the fancy rocker ankles and whatnot that can be immediately repacked into a troop builder 4-pack?
