While many list the “Rebel Commander” as an outstanding gap in the original 92, there has been some amount of debate about which character that Vintage figure was based on. Because of the “Commander” moniker and the mustache, an obvious choice would be Major Bren Derlin, but the figure is clearly wearing the standard outfit of the trench trooper as depicted on the card (Jereon Webb). But the figure doesn’t match that guy at all because of the mustache. Some have suggested Ledick Firest. He’s got the mustache and the standard white costume. He also seems to be in command of at least the troops immediately around him. But the figure has a darker ‘stache. There’s some evidence that Hoth’s notorious color timing could be to blame there, but the scarf is a deal-breaker. The figure has a dark brown scarf hanging from the headgear. That doesn’t match Ledick at all. There are two other clear possibilities.
One that matches the mustache and costume is a trooper played by matte painting supervisor Harrison Ellenshaw. He appears in a scene with Shawn Valdez where all the troops are artists working on the film. The mustache and costume (including scarf) are a good match, and the existence of a promo image suggests that it may have been a resource Kenner had to use for reference.
A different mustached trooper appears in the scene where Han is getting ready to depart on his Tauntaun to search for Luke. He’s not easy to pick out, but he’s there off to the right side. Though you cannot see his scarf in this scene, he is paired here with Jereon Webb. The fact that the card used an image of Webb could make this guy a good candidate. Nothing conclusive, certainly, but I lean toward this being the source of the original figure. It doesn’t ultimately matter, since the figure itself is more notable than any possible character it was based on. We need this guy. Sooner rather than later.
