It was announced at NYCC that Star Wars author Chuck Wendig would be writing a 5 issue mini-series for Marvel called Shadow of Vader. It is set to begin publishing in January, which means that the first issue will be solicited for pre-orders by Diamond Distributors at the end of this month in their Previews catalog.
However, on 10/12, just a few days after that announcement, news broke that Wendig had been fired by Marvel after having completed only 3 of the planned 5 issues.
If you want to dig into the polarizing arguments for his dismissal, may we direct you to the rest of the internet. But we hope you stay here. Star Wars is our diversion, and we want to keep the discussion as light and fun as possible. We want to focus on the impact on said diversion, rather than on the thing itself.
So, how will all this affect us, the loyal Star Wars funny book fans? Will Marvel cancel the project altogether? Will they publish it as a 3 issue mini-series using only what has been written? Will they bring in another writer to finish it? The series, Shadow of Vader, is described as detailing Vader’s influence on the galaxy across eras. That sounds an awful lot like an anthology series to me, so it probably wouldn’t be too difficult to get somebody to come in and finish it out. Chuck Wendig previously authored the Aftermath trilogy of novels. I’ve read them. I don’t think they are as bad as some do, but I wouldn’t describe them as great. I’m certainly not under the impression that they are universally beloved by fans. Wendig also authored the comic adaptation of The Force Awakens as well as the recently published Darth Vader Annual 2. He was also set to work on an as yet unannounced Star Wars book (I assume a comic) which has been cancelled.
