CNBC reports that Toys R Us is looking at a last ditch effort to save about 200 U.S. locations, roughly one quarter of the fleet as it exists today, although about 180 of the 800 operating locations are already slated to close.
Even as it winds down, the retailer is looking for ways to keep the brand alive, said the people familiar with the company's plans. In one plan, the company would sell the stronger Toys R Us Canadian business, along with roughly 200 of its most profitable U.S. stores, to a new buyer. The new business would then be run out of Canada.
The article explains that while U.K. Operations are already set to close all locations in 6 weeks, Canadian operations are relatively strong. There would be a chance for a buyer to purchase 200 US and all Canadian stores; just all the Canadian stores; or nothing.
Toys R Us is currently putting together its liquidation court papers, so the company may be down to its final gasps.
Whatever the future holds, it is a grim time for the last major toy retailer and its 30,000+ employees. We'll see if the brand survives, or disappears forever.
