WARNING: This is a plot summary of the short story, spoilers ahead:
Garindan hates the Empire. The Empire sent emissaries to his planet with grand promises of educating his people on some of the higher forms of technology, and enable them to partake in galactic politics and trade, to bring Kubindi into the modern age. He was selected among a handful of others to attend Imperial academies. But none was what it seemed. The group of Kubaz were actually enslaved, and indoctrinated in the ways of the Empire. Garindan's species was singled out because of their aptitude for spying, as they had physical abilities such as extreme ranges of smell and hearing.
Garindan had received a message from his family that his mate had died, and he needed to return home quickly to be with his family and get his affairs in order. He managed to obtain Imperial codes that would get him through the blockade around his planet. The codes were good only for three days, so he needed a job that would get him the credits necessary to buy his way off world. He found such a job, which was to help locate and capture a pair of droids. Right up his alley, as Garindan need only stroll around Mos Eisley, and his ears and snout would find them quickly enough. Sure enough, he spotted the golden protocol droid and his squat companion. Garindan called in the news. He hated the Empire, but he did what he had to. His Imperial contact promised him payment upon successful collection of the droids. Stormtroopers met up with him, and Garindan directed them to Docking Bay 94. He heard blaster fire, as he moved back to Chalmun's to wait for his account to be credited. The credits never came, and his contact informed him that the quarry as never collected. Garindan was disappointed, and desperately sought out another job he could take for enough credits. His codes would expire soon, so he was running out of time.
