“The Luckless Rodian” - From a Certain Point of View

Posted by Bret on 10/20/17 at 10:45 AM Category: Books

"The Luckless Rodian", by Renée Ahdieh, comes through the eyes of Greedo. This story follows a bit after the events of "Master and Apprentice." Luke had returned to Obi-Wan from his burning homestead, and had travelled to Mos Eisley. At that point we see the events in the cantina from Greedo's perspective.

WARNING: This is a plot summary of the short story, spoilers ahead:

Greedo walked towards Chalmun's, where Han Solo had just been spotted. Greedo knew Solo to be a coward who dealt only in smuggling, while Greedo dealt in death. Greedo was ready to exact revenge upon Solo. He never understood what his beloved Uncelta saw in Solo, but he would get his in the end. Greedo kicked a jawa aside, and entered Chalmun's. He found his way to the bar and ordered a few drinks to get himself ready.

Greedo was scanning the cantina, and found Solo's wookiee first mate walking around looking for a payday. The bartender suddenly yelled at someone over Greedo's shoulder. He saw some idiot kid with two droids at the door. He had the look of someone who wouldn't make it out alive. Greedo returned to his work of scanning for Han Solo. Suddenly, another commotion erupted. Naturally, it was that kid, who was shoved to the ground by someone who certainly would make Greedo's prediction come true. But an old guy showed up and pulled out one of those old laser swords he had heard about, and ended that. After things calmed down, Greedo finally spotted Solo.

Imperial Stormtroopers showed up to investigate the incident. At this point the old man and idiot kid were sitting with Solo and the Wookiee. Greedo was nervous that the troopers would detain Solo, and he would lose his chance, but he saw the old man and the kid slip away. The trooopers gave Solo a look, but left hm alone. The wookiee got up and left. This was Greedo's chance. He moved in quickly and sat down with Solo. He was savoring the moment, imagining the fear that would erupt on Solo's face once he realized his time had come. But Solo remained calm. Greedo hesitated, the last thing he remembered was a flash of light...and "bitter injustice."
