This past Wednesday, we revisited VC98 Grand Moff Tarkin. Many collectors were put off by the green coloring of Tarkin's uniform. And in our comments, there was some debate as to the color of the uniform props, the color they appear to be onscreen, and the color we actually want our imperial officer figures to be. I think Chris and I agreed that we prefer our uniforms to be gray (or grey).
I had set up a shot for the gallery in which I lined up all the named (by Hasbro) Imperial officers from the OT era. But at the last minute I had to pull the image because I had forgotten about Moff Jerjerrod. I was going to skip it because going back and finding all my officer figures again was going to be a chore, but after reading all the comments, figured it might be worth a discussion. So I recovered all the figures and found Jerjerrod for the follow up shot.
12 Shades of Grey...kind of.
I think I got them all, and for the record, they are:
Director Krennic - Rogue One (5POA)
Chief Bast - TSC - Death Star Briefing multipack
Officer Cass - TSC - Death Star Briefing multipack
Colonel Yularen - TSC - Death Star Briefing multipack
General Tagge - TSC - Death Star Briefing multipack
Admiral Motti - TSC - Death Star Briefing multipack
Grand Moff Tarkin - TVC
Admiral Ozzel - Saga
Captain Needs - TSC
General Veers - TSC
Moff Jerjerrod - Saga
Captain Piett - POTF2 (actually includes Admiral rank)
Check out the differences in color and tone for each figure. I didn't realize how bad things were with Hasbro until I did this lineup. I think we all agree that Krennic and Yularen wore special white uniforms, so they are exempt. Of course, even they have different versions of white. As for everyone else, they seem to have various shades of gray, that are tinted from blue to green. Some are lighter, some are darker, and then you have Tarkin who is straight up green. When lined up like this, you just want to show this to Hasbro and ask them why they can't have just picked a color and stuck with it? I personally prefer a color that is close to what Hasbro gave to Captain Needa, but in the end, I really just want some consistency, here. There should be 2 colors: White, and one version of gray, whatever that might be. When the figures are put together, they look ridiculous. Tarkin looks like the dry cleaners ruined his uniform when he enters the briefing room occupied by his fellow officers. And Piett also looks terrible next to Ozzel, although Piett is a crappy POTF2 figure that might not even deserve to be on your shelf in the first place, and he of course never wore that Admiral rank badge in the present of Ozzel, so there's that.
Anyway, I believe this shot has all the named Imperial officers from the OT (plus Rogue One). I didn't include any of the black uniformed officers, because I don't think Hasbro actually gave any of them names. I also did not put in any of the EU officers (from the comic packs, etc.). I purposely did not include Thrawn. The realistic version is Post ROTJ and no longer canon, and the animated version from Rebels is FREAKIN' ANIMATED!
Anyway, which color do your prefer for these figures? Which ones should get a priority update in TVC? (Hint: There is only one correct answer - well, technically two.) Are there any never-before-made officers from the OT that should debut in TVC? Will hasbro ever release a named officer in a black uniform? Will Jacob deGrom win the Cy Young?
