Disney’s Star Wars Box Office Matches the Purchase Price

In 2012, Disney purchased Lucasfilm fro $4.06B. As of yesterday, the combined global box office take for The Force Awakens (2015), Rogue One (2016) and The Last Jedi (2017) has surpassed that number.
Obviously that number isn't profit, because it doesn't include the production budgets ($245 for TFA, $200 for RO, and TLJ not known yet), nor the immense amount of money spent on marketing/advertising. But at the box office alone, the movies have at least matched the purchase price of the franchise. It is likely that by the time Solo finishes it's run, Disney's first 4 films alone will have allowed the company to roll past the breakeven point, about 5 and a half years after their purchase.
Also, none of this is accounting for merchandising, other media (TV, video games, etc.), and theme park attractions. To nobody's surprise, this was a great purchase for Disney. The surprise may be with how fast Disney made its money back.
