Disney Announces Star Wars Resistance Animated Show

Well, it's been teased for a while, but the official announcement came today.

The show will take place before The Force Awakens, and will presumably provide a background to the events of TFA in the same way the Rebels did for the events of the Original Trilogy.

Star Wars: Resistance will focus on Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot recruited to help spy on the First Order — coming into contact with such familiar figures as X-wing hotshot Poe Dameron and the menacing Captain Phasma.

As you can see if you check out the image, the animation style is "anime-inspired", so this will be a strong departure from the styles of both The Clone Wars and Rebels.

For voice talent, Oscar Isaac and Gwendolyn Christie have signed on, as have several other actors: Christopher Sean (Hawaii Five-0), Suzie McGrath (East Enders), Scott Lawrence (Legion), Myrna Velasco (Elena of Avalor), Josh Brener (Silicon Valley), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Bobby Moynihan (the new Duck Tales), Jim Rash (Community), and Rachel Butera (Tammy’s Tiny Tea Time).

(No official word on who will be voicing the lead character of Kazuda Xiono, but EW seems to believe it is Christopher Sean.)

Disney is looking to launch the show on Disney and Disney XD, but no premiere date was mentioned. It's also possible the show could be used as part of the upcoming streaming service that Disney announced months ago.

No doubt the show will be supported by action figures. It will be interesting to see how Disney/Hasbro handles this. If history is an indicator, any action figures would be stylized to look like their animated counterparts. Anime-styled Star Wars action figures might be interesting, but if the show is supported by adults in any meaningful way, we'll be looking for realistic versions.
