DEVELOPING: Something Definitely Appears Up With Target TVC DPCI

Yesterday we reported that Target scanners were showing unique DPCI numbers for the individual Vintage Collection figures. The report can be found HERE. Previous to this, the entire Vintage Collection line shared a common DPCI number meaning that, to Target's inventory management system, the worst of the worst peg-warming figures were indistinguishable from the hottest and fastest sellers. Even worse, unscrupulous collectors could buy those hot figures, and return a dud figure since they were the same thing to Target's computers. The potential switch to unique DPCI numbers was reason for optimism that it would solve Target's biggest issue with collectible items, but cold water was quickly thrown on our enthusiasm via our friend Chuck in the comments to that story:
For whatever reason, the price scanner is recognizing the UPC as the individual DPCIs used for Target.com orders, instead of the umbrella DPCI used for store POS. If you take it to checkout, they’ll probably scan $12.99 and all the same DPCI.
Despite this, we still think this is a fluid situation. The store that was showing the unique DPCI numbers for each character was fitted with the newer more compact scanners. As you can see from the image above, stores with the older style scanners are showing "Item Not Found" for The Vintage Collection. Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K. Strange things indeed. Whether this means a conversion to the unique DPCI's is underway or merely a change to a new general DPCI is unknown (or none of the above).
Switching to a new DPCI would make sense if our theory about a Vintage Collection re-launch is correct. Of course relaunching the line would have only made sense if Hasbro did away with the toxic repacks, but it appears they did not.
