Childrens Book May Reveal The Identity of The Last Jedi

Posted by Chris on 08/13/17 at 07:02 AM Category: The Last Jedi
Star Wars News Net reported that a new Star Wars book called the Star Wars: Look and Find activity book includes a few pages presumably depicting scenes from The Last Jedi. One of those depictions appears to pick up right where The Force Awakens leaves off with Rey approaching Luke on Ahch-To. The caption of that scene may reveal who the titular last Jedi is.

Starkiller Base is vanquished, but Kylo Ren has escaped. Thanks to Rey and her friends, BB-8 brought Luke Skywalker’s coordinates back to the Resistance. On their behalf, Rey travels to the planet Ahch-To, hoping to enlist Luke’s help. While Rey persuades the last Jedi to join the Resistance...

So there it is folks. Case closed, right? Luke is the last Jedi. Or maybe not. First of all, that's simply how Luke is referred to in-universe. As we all know, the The Force Awakens opening crawl spells it right out:

TFA crawl
There it is in yellow on black

But there's more to let the air out of this supposed reveal. Through the vagaries of weirdo foreign languages with their bizarre use of gender and plural articles and adjectives, we also know that "Jedi" in the title is plural. The German title is Die Letzen Jedi. That "n" on the end of "letze" clues us in that it's the plural form. The noun "Jedi" is both singular and plural, but we'll make up our own pluralization for the sake of argument. The title is really The Last Jedis. So that phrase from the activity book cannot reveal to whom the title is referencing because the mention is singular.

Jedi need to end
Luke needs a hug and maybe a stuffed Porg
So who are the last Jedis referred to in the title? Most assume it's both Rey and Luke, especially since the teaser trailer shows Luke declaring the Jedi need to end. But trailers are often cut to serve as red herrings, so I'm not putting much stock into that one line. The one thing we've heard is that there is going to be some big twist in the upcoming film, and it probably won't revolve around Rey's parentage which is reportedly inconsequential to the story.

What if "the last Jedi" does not reference anyone in Episode VIII? What if this is the bombshell Luke discovers during his research? Could the "last Jedi " refer to some ancient sect of the Jedi who were the last true Jedi? Perhaps they are the Gray Jedi we recently discussed in our "New Rules" series. Then through years of misinterpretations and reinterpretations of those original teachings, the Jedi we know from the time of the Old Republic were not true Jedi, but rather some heretical form. This would further explain their downfall. It's a thought, but probably not the correct one either. It would be a bitter pill for longtime fans to swallow if they learn what they thought "Jedi" meant for the past forty years is wrong. It would make the clone Spider-Man dust up look like a non-story. Furthermore, Star Wars sub titles tend to be fairly on the nose. Except for Attack of the Clones that is. That movie really should have been Clones to the Rescue or perhaps Clones 911 if you're feeling really saucy. So the last Jedi(s) are probably Rey and Luke with maybe a side of Kylo thrown in.
