In the first six films, C-3PO served as some comic relief. But between he and R2D2, they saved the day more than a few times. In the sequel trilogy so far, however, C-3PO has been reduced to an afterthought, providing neither lighthearted moments, nor doing much of anything to help the heroes' cause.
All that seems to have changed in the recently released Poe Dameron Annual #2. It seems that since the events at Endor, C-3PO as evolved into more than just a companion droid and encyclopedia of useless information and statistics. He has developed into a vital member of the Republic.
According to CBR.com, the comic goes into some detail regarding how Leia and the Republic (or Resistance - whatever) learned about the First Order's superweapon, Starkiller Base. Apparently Leia had assigned C-3PO to create and manage a complex, galaxy-spanning spy network comprised of droids. The network not only discovered the threat, but C-3PO's new role had him becoming more involved in Republic strategy.
Fans were disappointed in the both films from the sequel trilogy not giving proper respect to the lovable droids. But the comics seem to have developed a new backstory which shows Threepio evolving into a master strategist. Perhaps we'll get to see some of this new personalty on screen in Episode IX. It's the least JJ could do at this point.
