As reported by Verge, there will be an augmented reality (AR) game called "Find the Force" which can be played via the Star Wars app. Various stores across the world will have one of a handful of different displays available for shoppers to scan with an app and access different AR characters. Apparently, a brand new character that has not yet been revealed will also be part of the AR experience, so it will be fans' first opportunity to see him/her/it.
Using the Star Wars mobile app, fans can scan the displays, which will then trigger a “life size” digital version of a character. They can then take photos with the characters — and if they’re using an iOS device, they can record video of the digital avatar as well.
There will also be other "goodies" unlocked by using the app, like video clips and emojis. The Star Wars app is available for download, and you can try it out by scanning the image below. The actual AR "game" will run well past the events of Force Friday in participating stores, so if you don't actually go out for FF, you can still play the game later.
I don't know a whole lot about Pokemon GO, but that's what this sounds like to me.
If you use the app to scan the above image, you get a preview of what the AR is like. It will activate a group of three 3D animated Porgs that act as an overlay to your camera.
