Another Vintage Collection Packaging Rarity

Posted by Chris on 03/06/14 at 06:40 AM Category: Vintage Collection
It our previous report on Vintage Collection packaging variations we talked about the word unpunched. This variation focuses on another equally invented word from the world of vintage Kenner collectors. That word is "offerless". Offerless is just what it sounds like. The card does not feature a sticker for a free figure offer. It should be noted that "Free Emperor" offer was actually printed on the vintage Kenner Return of the Jedi cards, but I'm getting sidetracked.

Just like "unpunched" is considered desirable, "offerless" is also a preferred card state. So here we have the wave 3 Vintage Collection Endor Capture Luke Skywalker on the incorrect vintage Kenner Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight) card. This in and of itself is nothing special as wave 3 shipped pretty heavily. But this figure did not come from a wave 3 case as all of the figures in those cases included the free rocket firing Boba Fett offer. This particular version is offerless (and on a US card). Now you might be thinking "Big whoop. That Fett sticker peels off easily." This is true, but that would not be a truly offerless card since the telltale redemption form would still be nestled beneath the figure's feet.

So what is the origin of this figure? The next appearance of the Endor Capture Luke Skwalker after its debut in wave 3 was in the unfortunate wave 5 repaint wave which no longer included the Fett offer of the cards. Here's the gotcha. Staring with wave 5, the card was switched to the correct Endor Capture card. However, a scarce few of the initial cases of wave 5 had this Luke Skywalker figure still on the incorrect Jedi Knight card. And that my friends is the only source of the truly uncommon Vintage Collection Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight) offerless US card. It's a packaging constellation that only shipped for the blink of an eye.

For most of you reading this, you don't care and this bores you. You probably checked out before the end of the second paragraph. Good for you. Enjoy your sanity. For those of you who enjoy this type of packaging pedantry, I will be starting up a support group. I'll have coffee and donuts available.

As a final note, between the Fett offer, offerless, Jedi Knight, Endor Capture, shaded pill, unshaded pill, Return and Revenge configurations, there are 6 carded versions of this figure not counting variations in the placement of the accessories (which is another subject). I have them all on display. It's a sickness. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go count the bricks in my front walk.
