Action Figure Photography #3:  workmoreorless - Jason Yang

Posted by Bret on 08/24/17 at 07:02 AM Category: Action Figure Photography
Our next photographer is Jason Yang. Jason shared a bit about himself and his work with us...

Well hello there! My name is Jason Yang, better known on instagram as @workmoreorless. When I’m not making a living running my creative studio, Invisible Element, you’ll likely find me behind the camera lens.

“I’ve Got An Idea!”

It all started back in 2015 when I began noticing toy photography pop up in my instagram feed. After falling deep into one hashtag black hole after the other, I was inspired to give toy photography a try myself. In the beginning of 2016 I invested in a new camera, pulled out a few of my favorite Star Wars Black Series figures and started experimenting, all while learning the basics of photography. Before I knew it, I was hooked on this newly discovered hobby.

”To Your Stations!”

When I began toy photography, I defaulted to what I knew best - compositing and digital manipulation. Having experience in the world of post production, it made sense to be able to use a computer monitor to display an image that could be used as the background in the photo. Over the span of a few weeks, I developed a fairly unique style that has become somewhat of a calling card. I refer to this technique as "digirama", which employs the use of digital screens as light sources and also for projecting background imagery.

Creating these digirama shots can be extremely challenging but that is what I ultimately enjoy the most. The results I have been able to achieve with this indoor photography style have been quite exciting. Since I'm able to create almost any scene I can imagine with relative ease, the possibilities are seemingly endless. It's not surprising that toy photography has quickly become my passion.

”Nien Nunb Reporting In.”

I believe that anyone who is a toy photographer like myself would agree that the most rewarding part of the hobby is connecting with the community. I've made so many great friends through instagram who I keep up with on a regular basis, for some it's daily! The work that the community is constantly posting is inspiring! Everything from practical effects, to scratch built dioramas - the creativity is absolutely amazing.

Thank you for the opportunity to share my work and thoughts through this Action Figure Photography Series!
