The entire Star Wars collecting world will be turning its eye toward the Hasbro Pulse page today to monitor the first ever Black Series HasLab campaign, the Rancor with included Malakili (Rancor Keeper) figure. At the time of this writing (8:45 PM ET Sunday), it sits at just over 5,500 backers out of the required 9,000 (61%). The project is far from dead, and is currently picking up backers at a consistent rate. By the time this article publishes we will have a much better picture of where it stands. If decent momentum was maintained (Update: It wasn't.), it will have a puncher's chance of reaching the required funding goal.
If you are at all interested in the Rancor, we encourage you to back it. I'm astounded that the campaign is coming down to the wire like this. It was well on its way to being funded prior to the last live stream two weeks ago, but the fans revolted. One of the reasons for the revolt was the lack of a Malakili figure to compliment the hulking beast. Hasbro listened, and added the Rancor Keeper to the base offering. This is unprecedented and shocking, but despite this massive olive branch on Hasbro's part, it hasn't resulted in much of a bump. Black Series fans, I have to say I feel you are in danger of overplaying your hand. Hasbro did the equivalent of caving in negotiations. TAKE IT! You don't want to be Peter Griffin:
As a site focusing on the 3.75" scale and the Vintage Collection, you might think we'd be inclined to root against this Black Series HasLab campaign. Nothing could be further from the truth. It would be like rooting for a big project at your company to fail just because you're not working on it. It's never good for your employer to lose money. Similarly, it's hard to imagine any good would come from this campaign falling short. I've put my money where my mouth is, and have backed two of these Rancors. To me it's no different than buying the occasional Hot Toy as part of a focus collection. So if you're a TVC collection who is Jabba's Palace fanatic like me, you could consider backing this for a prestige Jabba's Palace display. You'd probably be able to sell the Rancor Keeper figure for $100, and get the price down to $250.
