When the hobby of collecting modern 3.75" Star Wars was in its golden age, the fan site world had a hub, and it was Rebelscum.com. Anyone who was active in the community during this time would say that Dan Curto was Rebelscum. The two were inextricable. While he's no longer there, for many of us who have been collecting the modern line since its debut, his is the first name we think of when we think of that outlet. That is the case for us here at Bantha Skull, and most of us still refer to him as his forum screen name of "Mr. Curto.” Others may remember him from the Curto Burns Collector Cast.
Dan's lasting contribution to the 3.75" Star Wars collecting world will be finalizing the form of the Rebelscum Photo Archive we know today. Few (maybe none) of us realized that the modern line would need and be worthy of thoroughly documenting, and not documenting in retrospective, but documenting as a primary source as it occurred. That is an invaluable historical source (especially for those of us who forgot how the Kabe & Muftak set was released). We may take this for granted now, especially when social media has enabled an army of photography enthusiasts to document their hobbies, but few were doing it then when self-publishing web content wasn't so easy. Dan's work actually inspired us here by making us realize that this thing of ours is worthy of archival. So if Star Wars fan sites have a coaching tree, you could say we're a branch off of Mr. Curto's. I also need to add that when we tried to get this site off the ground, Dan was encouraging and welcoming, which I will always remember, and tried to take as a "how to be" lesson.
The only beef I personally have with Dan is that in his similar work with Cool Toy Review, he got me hooked into the 3.75" Marvel Universe scale. I could have been buying more Scramble at Yavin sets instead of every shade of Hulk!
When I reached out to him about supporting the #FightForTVC, he immediately said to count him in. We'd like to thank Mr. Curto being such a champion of this hobby we love for so many years. Though it's never been said, I bet we also need to thank him for pushing to get so many of our favorite, and more obscure, figures added to the line. Dan is still active in the nerd-o-sphere as a sketch artist for many card companies, and if you want a great nerd news aggregator, follow him on Facebook.
Remember, in this phase of the campaign, you also can fight for TVC by using the hashtags #FightForTVC#BackTVC and #save375 on any and all social media platforms while also @ing Hasbro and Hasbro Pulse. Share what you love and stay positive!
