I was watching THIS VIDEO from my pal Tim at Bossk's Bounty where he ranks his top 17 single carded figures wearing Mandalorian armor. He mentions how great the "patchwork armor" VC166 - The Mandalorian figure is, but it would be nice if it were upgraded with rocker ankles and a soft good cape. I agree with that. Tim also mentions that it's not a high priority, and I also agree with that. I wouldn't want Hasbro taking from an already strained budget to make an incremental upgrade to an existing figure, but what if Hasbro could get one of those deep pocketed big box retailers to figuratively foot the bill via a store exclusive?
I recently lamented the demise of the Special Action Figure Set in favor of carded multipacks, and it occurred to me that the expression would be the perfect way to upgrade that VC166 figure. Again, this assumes that a retailer would take it as an exclusive so it doesn't come out of the annual Vintage Collection budget, but the upgrading doesn't stop there. We also don't have a season one Beskar armor Mandalorian with rocker ankles. The best version we have is the one that came packed with the Razor Crest, but it has the standard ball jointed ankles. Upgrading that figure to rocker ankles is the second argument for this proposed Special Action Figure Set.
Finally, we do have a fairly definitive season two Beskar armor Mandalorian. It has rocker ankles and the preferred soft goods cape. The figure is a dream, but it comes in the somewhat inaccessible (due to the price) Rescue Set. It also lacks the Dark Saber. If I could pitch one more minor bit of tooling upgrade, including a peg hole for a Dark Saber hilt to attach to Din Djarin's belt would really sweeten the pot. This would be the third piece of this proposed "The Mandalorian" 3-pack.
The idea here is we get upgrades of two nearly definitive Din Djarin figures, and better access to a third, without taking up precious slots in the mainline, and, more importantly, without taking any of the annual budget via the store exclusive program. The downside is that we're probably talking $50+ for minor upgrades of three figures you may already own. What says you? Is the juice worth the squeeze?
