In the vintage Kenner Star Wars line, it seemed there were two ways in which a character could crack that legendary lineup. The first and obvious way is by being a main character and/or having a lot of screen time. The second way is simply by being memorable regardless of screen time or importance to the plot. I've written it here before many times and I'm going to say it again:
The first 12 figures filled with mostly core heroes and villains made the Kenner Star Wars line a success. The next 8 figures of obscure aliens and droids made it a cultural phenomenon.
I literally can't express to you how exciting I found that first expansion of the Kenner line. It's like rules of the toy universe were rewritten just like the rules of the physical universe were rewritten when a Swiss patent clerk laid the groundwork for splitting the atom. My experience with action figures to that point was the Mego super hero line. I had Batman and Spider-Man. Getting Hammerhead in the Star Wars line would have been the equivalent of getting Quicksilver in the Mego line, which would have been utterly unimaginable at the time. Those 20-back figures were groundbreaking.
That is why I'm ecstatic that Fat Bib has managed to crack the Vintage Collection lineup with the Boba Fett's Throne Room set. He doesn't appear in many episodes of The Mandalorian or The Book of Boba Fett. In fact technically speaking, he's not in any episodes, appearing only in the post credit stinger for The Book of Boba Fett during the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, but it's oh so memorable. I'll probably forget a good deal of what takes place during the more mundane scenes from The Mandalorian, but I will never forget the way Bib says "Boba!" to feign excitement at seeing the resurrected Fett. In fact, it's made me even more excited for the upcoming Boba Fett (Morak) figure so I can recreate that scene.
I truly view this Bib Fortuna as a landmark figure in the post 2020 Vintage Collection landscape. 2019 gave is Saelt-Marae (Yak Face) and Klaatu, but since then, the line has felt more like it's adhering to the formula on the first 12 Kenner figures instead of the next 8. This Bib Fortuna give me hope that we can swing the line a little bit back towards the weird and wacky.
You can order the Boba Fett's Throne Room set with this fat Bib Fortuna figure on Hasbro Pulse HERE. As my esteemed colleague pointed out yesterday, don't sleep on ordering if you want it. There is a finite stock, and it will probably sell out long before the shipping date in 2023. In fact, Yak Face tweeted the following on Thursday:
About 1/3 of the Boba Fett's Throne/Playset preorder allotment have sold. https://t.co/LhU2wXXz3D
