I will be honest. I thought the campaign would be dead this weekend since this is such a popular vacation week in the United States. I listened to reports of the city "clearing out" on Boston sports radio this past Friday as people headed to the beaches of New England. Remember, Jaws takes place this week on Martha's Vinyard. Yesterday was the anniversary of the death of the poor Kitner boy. So I expected some frigid results for the campaign starting the 29th and all the way through next weekend. In my head projections, I was expecting 20 backers a day for these past two days, 30 per day for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 20 again on the 4th. That would have put us just short of 6400 heading into the critical final three days (but definitely in good shape to back).
To my shock and great pleasure, the Cantina put up amazing numbers yesterday for a mid-campaign weekend day. It picked up 100 backers. Want to know who good that is for day 23 of a HasLab campaign? By comparison, the Ghost put up 40 backers on day 23, and Giant Man 25. HasLabs and crowd funding campaigns typically have a predictable trajectory: a spike at the beginning, a spike at the end, and relatively flat in between. The Cantina seems to be throwing the rule book out the window. The early trajectory virtually overlays that of Giant Man, but it's pulling away in the middle (Cantina in blue):
So this unpredictability can be a good or bad thing. It's good in that it might mitigate the concerns about the slow start with respect to hitting all the tier unlocks (basic backing should be assured at this point, but ending on a holiday weekend does still give me trepidation). It's bad in that since it's not following the expected spike-flat-spike pattern, maybe we can't assume the end spike. For that reason, the more backers we put in the bank this week, the better. It would be ambitious, but if we can get to 7,000 by the end of the day this upcoming Friday (120 backers/day), I won't rule out anything for a final total to include Mr. Schous. Stay vigilant, true believes, AND LET'S GOOOOOO!
