This article is a targeting a very specific person who may or may not exist in reality. That is the collector who knows that they are definitely going to back the HasLab Cantina, but for reasons unknown, they are going to wait until the last minute to do so. According to the socials, this collector exists. I'm not 100% sure it's not a ManBearPig construction, but in case it's not, I'm going to speak to this hypothetical collector. There is absolutely zero reason for anyone to wait until the last minute to get back the Cantina if they already plan to. This isn't Ebay. There is no sniping with a HasLab. But there is a very good reason to back early.
As most of us know, there are a few key details as to when/if you get charged:
If the project backs, you don't get charged until just after midnight on July 10th.
If the project does not back, you DO NOT get charged.
So if you plan to back, there is no reason not to do so now. Whether you back today or at 11:59 PM on July 9th, you will get charged at the same time (sometime right after midnight on 7/10). If you backed today, there are only three scenarios that can occur, and there is no downside to any of them:
The Cantina does not back. You are not charged, and you are not out any money.
The Cantina backs, but does not unlock any stretch goals. You are charged on 7/10, and you have three of the rarest figures in the history of Star Wars action figures.
The Cantina backs and unlocks one of more stretch goals. You are charged on 7/10. The three exclusive figures are still relatively rare, plus you get one or more non-exclusive figures on exclusives cards. If you're not a carded collector and don't care about those exclusive cards, you can sell them. They will probably fetch ~$100 each.
Again, if you plan to back the Cantina at some point, there is no downside to doing it sooner rather than later. But there is a huge upside to backing sooner, and that's the psychology of crowd funded products. FOMO (fear of missing out) is a huge component. Right now, the Cantina and the three exclusive figures, two of which are grails-in-waiting, are not real. This is because it hasn't been fully backed (though I'm reasonably confident that it will). The FOMO crowd is not incentivized to jump on board. Once it backs the thought of missing out on the exclusive Tonnika Sister and Wuher figures will kill them. They will hold their collections cheap without them (as should we all), regardless of whether or not the OT and Cantina are a big part of their collection focus. (Fans who despise Episode VIII still hunt down the Crait Luke.)
Once the Cantina unlocks, the FOMO crowd will come running. The sooner this happens, the greater our chances of unlocking all of the stretch goals. Reminder: though the stretch goal figures are not exclusive to this HasLab, they do not go into production unless they are unlocked via this HasLab. This Cantina campaign is following a similar trajectory to the Giant Man HasLab. I believe that Giant Man did not reach the minimum backing level until the last day of the campaign. Once it did, and as predicted, the backing took off on a hockey stick trajectory. It fell just short of the final tier unlock, but it wasn't because it was unachievable. It was because the campaign ran out of time. Let's make sure that doesn't happen to the Cantina. If you plan to back, please do so sooner rather than later.
