Kanan has been captured and the Empire is vigorously searching for his comrades. Wait...what does vigorously mean? Does it mean barely? Because two AT-DP’s and a squad of stormtroopers are having a hard time finding them in a town of five people and three of them are Rebels. Ezra, Sabine, Zeb, and Chopper get the drop on them and commandeer one of the AT-DP’s. Chopper plugs into the computer in an effort to locate Kanan so they can mount a rescue. There’s actually a pretty cool AT-DP chase and firefight that ends with Hera having to evac them in the Phantom.
No luck finding Kanan; and Hera’s communication with Fulcrum leaves everyone despondent as it is made clear that they cannot risk themselves to rescue Kanan and endanger the greater Rebellion. This is an important point in this episode, as it shows the tension between our Lothal rebel cell and the larger Alliance. How there are times when what they want personally must be sacrificed for the greater good that they are supposed to be fighting for. I mean, they are going to end up rescuing Kanan anyway; but the point still stands. Of course the kids aren’t willing to accept this and go make contact with Vizago.
I like Vizago and wish we had seen more of him this season. He reminds me of Vilmarh Grahrk. I would have liked to see the Rebels interact with him more to illustrate how, at this stage, they have to deal with unsavory elements in order to fight the Empire because they have so few resources. Compromise is what I’m talking about here. In exchange for a favor to be named at a later date, Vizago tells Ezra that, without their communications array, the Empire has been using droids to convey messages, orders, etc. Hera finds out what’s going on but agrees to go along with the plan to droid-nap an Imperial astromech and put Chopper in its place.
Chopper gets aboard an Imperial cruiser and learns that Kanan is being transferred to Mustafar. When he gets back onboard the Ghost he straight tries to murder the other droid even though it was very nice and helpful and probably could have provided a lot of valuable information to the Rebels. Oh, Chopper, you adorable little psycho. Meanwhile, by the way, Kanan is being tortured by Tarkin and the Grand Inquisitor. Kallus is there too.
Rewatch? As the middle part of a 3 episode season ending arc, you kind of need to. I’d say it’s the weakest episode in the “trilogy”, but you do get some good fight scenes and we see some growth for Ezra.
All four season of Rebels are currently streaming on the Disney+ service.
