REBELS REWATCH: Season 1, Episode 12: Vision Of Hope

Rebels S1 E12

The episode opens with Kanan training Ezra to deflect blaster bolts with his new lightsaber. Sabine, Zeb, and Chopper are all shooting at him, and rather listlessly I might add. It’s almost as if they aren’t trying to kill him. Ezra has trouble focusing because he just wants to get back in the ship to watch the Old Tyme Imperial Radio Hour featuring pirated transmissions from Senator in exile Gal Trayviss. Ezra has a vision of Trayviss coming to Lothal and needing their help. He passes out (Again? Is the kid a Jedi or just hypoglycemic?).

When he comes to he learns that the show has already started, but it’s okay, Hera Tivo’d it. Trayviss does indeed cut in and gives them a veiled message that he will be coming to Lothal and wishes to make contact with any anti-Imperial sympathizers. Kanan is skeptical that the whole thing could be a trap. This is because Kanan is not an idiot. Ezra goes out and makes contact with Zahr from the Imperial academy. Having deduced that Trayviss will be waiting to make contact at the old Senate building, the Rebels stealthily approach. They see quite clearly that a dignitary shuttle has landed on a nearby platform.

And the Empire never noticed this? On the planet that has a blockade in place? Are you sure this isn’t a trap, Ezra? Ok. They schlep through some sewers to get to Trayviss and then extricate him as the Empire closes in on him. They want him because he is an anti-Imperial dissident and definitely not a double agent whose job is to lead real Rebels into traps, you know. They split up, with Trayviss escorted by Hera and Ezra. Hera, suspicious at Trayviss’s inability to run 20 feet without having to stop and rest, gives him an unloaded blaster and he gives himself away. The rest of the gang rendezvous just as Kallus and his Stormtroopers arrive.

The gang escapes, leaving an unconscious Trayviss behind. They should have shot him. Guarantee you Cassian would have shot him. Everybody returns to the Ghost, wiser for the experience; but nobody stops to consider that Ezra may also be a double agent because he led them into such an obvious trap.

Rewatch? I don’t know. It’s not a terrible episode, but there are some holes in it as you can see. I would say it is worth watching just because Brent Spiner is in it. I get kind of giddy when a Star Trek actor (or Trektor as I call them) does a Star War. But I don’t know that I could honestly call this essential.

All four season of Rebels are currently streaming on the Disney+ service.
