The 40th Anniversary of Return of the Jedi is coming up next year. This is a good thing. Return of the Jedi rocks. Even if you're lukewarm on Episode VI, most agree that it is the most toyetic of the Original Trilogy movies. Back in the days of themed waves, the announcement of a Return of the Jedi wave was always met with excitement (until it was revealed that the wave would come with a knock-kneed Luke Skywalker).
There is a massive amount of new Star Wars media in the immediate future. This is a good thing. At the time of this writing, we can look forward to Bad Batch season 2, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, the Andor series, the Ahsoka series, The Acolyte, Mandalorian season 3, and Rogue Squadron is still reportedly scheduled for a late 2023 release despite earlier contradictory reports. Good God Almighty, that is a TON of new media, but again this is a good thing.
Reese's peanut butter cups prove that two good things can intersect to make an even better thing. Conversely, with respect to the Vintage Collection, it's hard to imagine that the combination of a glut of new media and the 40th Anniversary of the Return of the Jedi is a good thing. We, as a collective, only focus on what we don't have. We never take inventory of what we do have. So when Black Series gets a Nomad Boba Fett announced, we have a “woe is me” moment, but we never think to be content that we have a definitive Lobot. As has been said many times, if you want to put a figure on the board, something else has to come off. Something has to give, and it seems that the loudest voices in the community right now are the ones complaining if we don't get new media figures in a timely manner. Do the math.
We know that the exclusive platform is a way to expand offerings in a given calendar year. A single exclusive partner could never fund a newly tooled figure without risking bankruptcy, but if I were a retailer, whose name does not rhyme with Barget or Balmart, I would explore any partial tool opportunities to take advantage of the Episode VI anniversary. There are some low hanging fruit in that category.
Don't forget to come back here at 2PM ET today for an exclusive reveal.
