One Final Update Before We Move Hosts (Hopefully)

Wheels are in motion. Things are afoot.

Here's where we stand with the process. I spent this past week reducing the footprint of this site to make the migration as smooth as possible. Plus, we have finite storage space on our new host, of which our previous footprint would have taken half. Now we will have some breathing room. The downside is that Mr. Nomadscout can no longer use Bantha Skull as his personal unlimited cloud storage. I can't believe he uploaded 20 gigs worth of pictures of himself wearing various types of pants that have handy side pockets for whatnots. I get that it's an important scientific study, but get an external hard drive, man!

We've signed up at our new host. We're going up a level in hosting. Hopefully this means better performance and a better experience for our users (and no more failed image loads). In order to get the costs down to a palatable level, we had to pay for three years in advance, so I meant it when I said we're now broke. Hopefully we can save up enough scratch to give away a Ghost next year. The good news is that as long as this new host doesn't cause me agita, I'll be sticking around for at least three more years (something I wasn't so sure about prior). I have submitted the support ticket with our new host to migrate our site over. We were told this process should be concluded by the end of this weekend. I would do it myself, but even with this recent diet I put the site on, it's still a relatively huge footprint, and I don't want to be uploading all weekend. I'm a little nervous that they're going to run into issues with the migration (due to our current host being a nightmare). In that case, this won't be the last post on the subject.

But let's assume it goes well. Once completed, I will switch the current host's home page over to THIS PAGE (assuming I can still remember how to change the home page). Then I will submit the DNS updates so that our URL points to the new host and server. It takes 24 to 72 hours for DNS changes to propagate globally, but in my past experience, it happens quicker (finger's crossed). If you're seeing that moving page linked above, your DNS is still directing you to the old server. Once you start seeing the standard home page, you will be on our shiny new server. I will make a post over on the new host announcing the move is complete, and would appreciate it if you all sign-on in the comments (remember you can't all be Red 5).

I'm nervous as heck, and don't really have the temperament for this sort of thing. I'll basically spend the weekend on pins and needles waiting for the next shoe to drop. Despite what Mr. Nomadscout thinks, I'm not an IT guy (I'm a developer), but he thinks all tech people are "IT guys". If you're the type to pray, please keep us in yours. My biggest regret is that we won't be here to talk about the London Comic Con reveals tomorrow. I suspect 1027 was so lame for Star Wars so they could have some good con reveals.
