The currently controversial Walmart exclusive Stormtrooper has finally delivered to us what is good enough to be called a definitive Original Trilogy Stormtrooper. It's not 100% accurate to Episodes IV through VI, but most fans aren't squabbling about that, especially at the 3.75" scale. It liberated the ultimate army builder from being imprisoned in the 2004 VOTC Stormtrooper sculpt, which was decent for its time, but woefully out of date for 2022. Unfortunately, the best Desert Stormtrooper (aka Sandtrooper) is still using that mold. The best version we have is the VC112 - Sandtrooper figure. BUT any new Sandtrooper should be the ORIGINAL Original Trilogy Sandtrooper. VC112 is actually a Special Edition version of the Desert Stormtrooper. Contrary to popular opinion, the OOT Sandtrooper is not just a Stormtrooper plus a pauldron and a dirty wash.
There are three major differences between the two, and the Black Series #03 - Sandtrooper actually captured them all. I'm sure these are not all the differences, but they are the key ones:
2005's Clone Trooper to Stormtrooper Evolution set actually captured these details in the 3.75" scale, but that figure is out of date now, as well. One last thing you’ll notice about the Black Series release is that the ammo pouch is on the shoulder and not attached to the pauldron. This matches how the Santroopers appear on screen:
It would be great to see this detail captured in the Vintage Collection. Then for a troop builder pack, Hasbro could release Sandtroopers without the ammo pouches for a completely legitimate on-screen load out:
In fact, here would be my dream trooper builder pack:
Orange pauldron with ammo pouch on shoulder
Orange pauldron no ammo pouch
Black pauldron no ammo pouch
Gray pauldron no ammo pouch
