My Personal Top Scenes From All Star Wars Major Media PART I

Posted by Bret on 08/18/21 at 07:05 AM Category:
With Season 1 of The Bad Batch in the rear view mirror, I got to thinking of my favorite moments from each of the major Star Wars media releases. Usually something that managed to pull at the feels, or sometimes a moment that was simply epic in scope. Then, of course, I was wondering if these could be faithfully and accurately recreated in 3.75" action figure form.

The only rule for this countdown is a single moment from each source. As there are 17 (by my count), I'll list the the first 12 in reverse order by release date. Then I'll do the top 5 in order of my top favorites. This will take 3 days, so kick back and relax. Without further delay, here is my list:

12 Favorites That Didn't Make the Top 5:

The Bad Batch

Overall, it wasn't the most inspired series, but it had some really nice moments. My favorite was actually the first sequence, which had a lot going on. It (re)-introduced Jedi Master Depa Billaba and her young apprentice, Caleb Dume, and Clone Captain Grey, as they were about to be annihilated by CIS forces. Then the Bad Batch swings into action and saves the day. Following this is a very well done perspective of Order 66. As you'll see, Order 66 gets me every time.

Toys: We've actually got a decent start with plenty of Battle Droids (even terrible ones that seem to be the right deco from TSC), CIS tanks, white Phase 2 clone troopers, the upcoming Captain Grey, and even a crappy Depa Billaba. We'd need a young Caleb Dume (while we still lack his realistically styled adult version from Rebels - and basically any other non-animated figures from that source). And then, obviously, we'd need 5 other figures that comprise the team after which the series is named.

Scene It: Nope. Much of the background is available, but the main players are conspicuously absent.

The Rise of Skywalker

This film was a hot mess. I don’t blame JJ too much. The fact that there was no coherent strategy for the sequel trilogy was a disaster from the get go. JJ retaking the helm of TROS was probably the best shot, but he couldn’t save the day after being handed a more difficult task than Lucas himself had with ROTS. All that said, my favorite moment was actually more because of the trailer than the film. Old Man Lando gleefully cackling while at the helm of the Falcon gave me chills every time I watched that trailer. It was a cool moment in the film, but it was seeing Billy Dee in the trailer for the first time that hit me in the feels.

Toys: We have the BMF Falcon. We have an ST Chewie from the Galaxy’s Edge Falcon. But no Old Man Lando. You customizer barbarians probably could make short work of the TVC Lando from Solo and a Billy Dee head. But just know that you’re all monsters.

Scene It: Nope. Need Lando.

Resistance

Resistance was generally met with a complete lack of interest by many fans. I gave it a shot and watched both seasons. It had some potential, but failed to live up to it. There was one memorable moment for me, which was when the show crossed into the film timeline. Hux’s speech on Starkiller Base was broadcast around the galaxy, and the small band of heroes watched the holonet in horror, while the local garrison of stormtroopers cheered. It was a decent moment in an otherwise forgettable show.

Toys: Resistance had its own line of toys, but sadly was both 5POA and animated styling. The one-two punch of death! To recreate this scene you could use a bunch of regular TFA troopers, but a 5POA Hux and a bunch of cartoon nonsense is all you can do to try to round things out. Terrible, but given the lame source material, not exactly a tragedy.

Scene It: Nope. 5POA and animated is pretty much all we have here.

The Last Jedi

The most divisive film in the entire Saga. So divisive, I shan’t bother getting into anything here. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed the Rey/Kylo team up against the Praetorians. People pick on the choreography and such, but I thought it was a blast. Sometimes you just gotta roll with it.

Toys: For better or worse, TLJ got very little in the way of superarticulated figures. The best you can do here is have one of the four Praetorian types. Amazingly, we never got a proper SA Rey or Kylo from TLJ. You’d have to (gasp) use 5POA to at least pretend like you’ve got something, but considering the extreme dynamism of the characters here, 5POA is woefully inadequate. You could throw in the TVC Snoke, although you’d have to do some customization if you want him to be bisected. And you also have the throne from that weird transforming BB-8 set. In reality, this scene is a bust in 3.75”.

Scene It: Nope.

Solo

Another film that isn’t particularly well loved by the community, but I kinda liked it. It had some good scenes, while a lot of the fan service seemed forced. It’s too bad the production was a disaster, because there was some potential buried in there. My favorite moment was when Solo threatened Enfys Nest with his band of armed soldiers that was waiting to pounce from that freighter over there. At that moment Lando became Lando, and exited stage left in the Falcon.

Toys: The scene is probably more memorable from a toy perspective if you try to recreate the standoff between the Cloud Riders and Han, Woody, and Khaleesi. Sadly, we only have Han and Enfys Nest in superarticulated form. You’d need 5POA Beckett and Qi’ra, along with Weazel, the only other Cloud Rider we have.

Scene It: Nope. We have the 2 main characters, but no supporting cast in SA form.

The Force Awakens

TFA started out great, and the moment with the best feels was "the junk will do" after Rey and Finn had to figure out how to get away from the First Order on Jakku. Coupled with music, this was the moment you (thought you) knew that Star Wars was back!

Toys: All you need for this scene is Rey and Finn, which we have, as well as the Galaxy's Edge Falcon. It helps to have BB-8, along with some FO troopers to give chase. Unkar Plutt is 5POA, but it's not the worst thing ever made. It's doesn't take much, but we've got all we need. to recreate this.

Scene It: Yes. Finally. We have have what we need to recreate my favorite scene from The Force Awakens. Yay!

Part 2 is tomorrow.
