March Madness is upon us, so it's time to publish the results of my completed bracket (see image at the end of the article). Once again, our friends from the @SWTVC Instagram Page have organized the event. You can download all the assets you need to complete your own bracket from their Linktree HERE.
Year after year, my brackets are getting progressively more OT. There are many reasons for this, the first of which is multifactoral. The OT is my favorite Star Wars source by such a wide margin, that I think the 2009 Star Trek reboot actually sneaks in at number 2 before we get to the PT, but Hasbro is making virtually no 100% newly tooled OT figures year over year. Disney+ series, which have a fraction of the viewership of the movies, seem to have no obstacle to getting 100% newly tooled figures despite the fact that if feels like half of them have difficulty selling through without going on some sort of sale:
Because whenever I make this point, someone always says, "yeah, but Lobot didn't sell through", I need to clarify that I'm not saying that all new media pegwarms and all OT sells. To be fair though, comparing partially tooled third releases of Lobot or Bib Fortuna to 100% newly tooled Disney+ main character debuts is the equivalent of being proud of a sixteen year old dominating Freshman football. My OT (and PT) advocacy is almost exclusively for #MakeTheMains at this point, which, WHEN THEY ARE NOT KITBASHED HALF MEASURES, will sell. Better sales is the only way to get a bigger TVC budget, so my bracket prioritizes figures that I am confident will sell well. To that point, I even bumped off my beloved Tonnika Sisters before the final four.
My Elite Eight:
Baylan Skoll
Snowtrooper
Tonnika Sister
Anakin Skywaler
Luke Skywalker
Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead)
C-3PO
Han Solo
So that's 1 D+, 1 PT and 6 OT (4 of which are mains).
My Final Four:
Snowtrooper
Anakin Skywalker
Luke Skywalker
Han Solo
My Final Four whittles down to 3 OT and 1 PT (all mains). This leads to a Finals of the Snowtrooper vs. Luke, and for the second year in a row, my winner is:
My mindset is about getting TVC back to the dominant line in terms of sales so Hasbro can get back to gambling on the occasional deeper cut figure without it potentially jeopardizing the entire line.
