Our man at SDCC, Agustín, has gotten some amazing information from the folks at GTP Toys to piggyback on our story from Friday.
Here is a summary of the conversation that Agustín had with a rep at the GTP Toys booth today, which clarifies and adds to the information from Friday.
Regarding the "clip system" Lego did NOT complain about patent infringement. It was actually Disney/LFL who asked GTP to stop production, due to that Lego license. GTP's plans are to approach Lego at some point in the future and ask them to let GTP restart production of the classic Space Walls, given that Lego is not actually doing anything similar to what GTP does.
The massive hangar bay mentioned on Friday is waiting licensor approval at the moment. As soon as GTP gets approved, they will announce the project and start taking orders. This should happen late this year or earlier next year.
Price will be in the $300 range.
The idea is to do this in a HasLab fashion.
Final product should be available for delivery by Q4 2020.
It is going to be a Death Star hangar bay, specifically sourced to A New Hope.
It is going to be "L" shaped. The longer side of the L will host the blast doors (that will open automatically) to recreate the Vader / Obi-Wan duel and the Falcon escape.
The L will be big enough to accommodate a Hasbro Millennium Falcon (BMF!)
A second idea from GTP is to manufacture the blast doors to recreate the Leia and Luke escape when Luke blasts out the controls that operate the bridge. The idea is to have that set somehow interact with the hangar bay.
Also, while we won't go into specifics, the information we have leads us to believe that there is a "collaborative" (our word) relationship with Hasbro, and that there is no "adversarial" or "competitive" nature to that relationship. It seems that both companies would be able to serve the collecting community while driving interest in each others' products.
