I Want To See What A HasLab Star Wars Army Builder Would Do

The current Marvel Galactus HasLab campaign got off to a rocket start and was outpacing the Razor Crest through the first 24 hours. It beat the Crest to 6,000 by a full four hours. While I fully expect it to back by the end of the campaign some forty days and change as of the time of this writing, it's safe to say that the Razor Crest's record is safe for now. Of course the previous record holder was another Marvel product, the Sentinel. This lead Mr. Nomadscout to ask what made Galactus so much less popular than the Sentinel. Don't get mad at him. He don't know nuthin'. He's a nerd. [Editor’s Note: YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS A NERD!]

While there are many factors that contribute to the relatively slower pace of the Devourer of Worlds compared to the mutant-hunting Latviathans, one factor stands above all others. Sentinels are army builders and Galactus is not. This lead to the realization that all three Star Wars HasLab projects have been for items that collectors would only need one of. There is no display reason why a collector would need more than one Sail Barge, Razor Crest, or the upcoming Black Series Rancor. I mean I bought two each of the Barge and Crest, but I'm a pretty big deal. A majority of collectors would stop at one. Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of multiples were ordered as "investments", but I'm talking about pure collecting needs. A collector who is strictly purchasing for their own collection would only buy one.

This naturally made me ponder what would happen with a Star Wars HasLab where collectors were inclined to buy more than one for display purposes. Would it go even higher than the Razor Crest? Probably not. That was the perfect marriage of zeitgeist along with many people left with dwindling discretionary spending options due to the pandemic. But it would be fun to see. This inexorably leads to the discussion of what HasLab-worthy Star Wars items would fall into this "multiple purchase" category. I can come up with four (all Vintage Collection):

  • Bantha: I know I would personally back three. Two to open and one for my usual "just in case" back up. This gets bonus points for its Mandalorian tie in.

  • Dewback: I know we got a decent one in The Legacy Collection, which was re-released in the TPM 3D packaging, but that was based on the digital model from Episode I with the pointier snout. I and many fans would like one sourced from A New Hope like the Black Series version. As with the Bantha, put me down for three for the same exact reasons.

  • Y-Wing: The only way we're ever going to see an updated Y-Wing is via HasLab, and I would love to see that happen. Personally, I would only get one for display, but I know many fans would want multiples. I'd only commit to two at first, but some snappy stretch goals could get me to order a third.

  • Army Builder 4-Pack: Okay, this one is tricky. In order for this to be on HasLab, it would have to be army builders that aren't viable for the main line. That's a narrow subset. Additionally, Hasbro likes to lean on themes (unnecessarily in my opinion). The two TVC 2.0 multipacks so far have been themed (Skiff Guards and Bad Batch). I say nuts to themes. The only theme needs to be "army builders that we're never going to slot into mainline". I would take an update to the vintage Kenner Endor Trooper in the jumpsuit, a Rebel Fleet Trooper update with a more generic head and a holster, an Imperial Swamp Trooper (what you rubes call a "Mud Trooper"), and an update to the Galactic Marine. I'd personally back 10, take a breath, and then consider how many more I want.
