David Prowse, the man who was Darth Vader, has passed. He was 85. He was an iconic figure in the hearts and minds of Star Wars fans across the globe. Although his face was not known to most casual fans, he was an eager participant at events and conventions over the years, and easily became a fan favorite. Prowse and George Lucas weren't getting along in recent years, and Prowse was essentially banned from official events. It certainly didn't hamper his popularity among the fan base. While his face wasn't as instantly recognizable to the public as other actors in The Saga, he will always hold a very special place in the world.
Mark Hamill paid tribute:
So sad to hear David Prowse has passed. He was a kind man & much more than Darth Vader. Actor-Husband-Father-Member of the Order of the British Empire-3 time British Weightlifting Champion & Safety Icon the Green Cross Code Man. He loved his fans as much as they loved him.
