Our friends at the @SWTVC Instagram page have completed another successful March Madness event. We should all thank them for putting this together. It has become massive talking point in the community and really boosts engagement. It puts the passion of the TVC community on full display. Huzzah, gentlemen!
The winner of this year's event is Count Dooku, who many feel is long overdue for representation in the Vintage Collection. I don't disagree with that sentiment on face value, but the intent for the March Madness poll is to determine the most wanted newly tooled figure. That is where I personally have a disconnect. Christopher Lee was 80 when Attack of the Clones debuted. He's actually only eight years older than Sir Alec Guinness, who was a comparatively youthful 63 in A New Hope. The articulation requirements for a Dooku figure are closer to that of General Madine than they are to Darth Maul. For that reason, I would be fine with a partial retool of 2005's Sith Evolutions figure, but I digress. Dooku was the #1 seed last year, and he won the whole shooting match this year, so the fans have spoken.
Before putting a bow on this event for another year, I would like to call attention to the Final Four participants:
Luke Skywalker
Count Dooku
Sabine Wren
Asajj Ventress
Do you notice anything missing? There are no new media figures in the semifinals. Combined with the deep discounts we keep seeing for new media figures (see below), I think this is another indication that Hasbro should focus the Vintage Collection on adding to collections that have been building for decades instead of releasing a small smattering of figures to barely start new media collections. The latter runs contrary to world building. Again, I would gladly sacrifice the new Andor, Val, and Reva for just one Episode IV Luke.
And here's that deep discounting I mentioned earlier:
