According to Deadline, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, showrunners of HBO’s Game of Thrones, have exited their Star Wars project with Disney...at least for now.
It appears to be an issue of time, rather than interest, or even backlash after some unfavorable fan reaction to the ending of GoT. It seems that the pair are not disinterested, but simply don’t have the time to devote to the project.
They reportedly signed a $100M+ deal with Netflix, and cannot handle the Star Wars workload. They maintain interest, as well as a love for the franchise, but the timing is not right.
That still leaves Rian Johnson and Kevin Feige as rumored to be helming other feature Star Wars projects in the future. In the meantime, we still have The Mandalorian, the Cassian Andor series, and the Obi-Wan project.
