Recently we've seen The Black Series tap historical 3.75" packaging for exclusives. Replicas of POTF2 (both orange and green), Episode I, and Clone Wars package styling have been utilized for repackaged (or pre-packaged) exclusives. The appeal to Hasbro is obvious. With the exception of the Target exclusive Black Series Clone Wars figures, no new tooling is involved. It's sort of the equivalent of the "badge engineering" engaged in by the automotive industry. It's also a gimmick, and Bantha Skull is typically against gimmicks in The Vintage Collection.
In the case of classic Kenner packaging, however, it's a legitimate and nonarbitrary appeal to nostalgia. Hasbro, I can promise you that this wouldn't be met with apathy or indifference the way the Black Series community reacted to some of the aforementioned exclusives. Tapping Droids and Power of the Force packaging for exclusives would be reason to rejoice for the carded collecting community. I realize this would require Hasbro to invest in tooling for replica coins, but it's hard to envision that being a deal breaker considering coins have already been costed in during the 30th Anniversary Collection.
The following Vintage Collection figures are prime for carded exclusives with little to no tooling required.
Droids
RD-D2 - animated deco
C-3PO - animated deco
Boba Fett - animated deco and a new belt
Power of the Force '85
Luke Skywalker (Stormtrooper Disguise)
Death Star Gunner
Han Solo in Carbonite
Luke Skywalker (in Battle Poncho)
Please note that I limited the POTF '85 suggestions to figures that debuted on that card. I also omitted Lando General because it's already been repacked twice.
I would personally be as exited for Luke Stormtrooper on a POTF '85 card as I would for whichever new figure Hasbro announces next, but I'm weird. What says you?
