In honor of the NFL Draft, Bantha Skull is conducting our 2nd annual Vintage Collection version. This year I will be drafting against Dustin (CJ). We would have included Bret, but he's very busy these past two years. As always, each pick will be followed by some expert draft analysis.
CJ is on the clock...
First Round
CJ (Round 1, Pick 1):
Uncle Owen (G) - Texas A&M
Fans are never happy when a guard goes this high, but this guy is a proven road grader. He's already got veteran toughness and leadership, and is dedicated to protecting the most important guy on the team to keep things moving forward. He's under appreciated, but his value cannot be overstated.
Chris (Round 1, Pick 2):
ANH Luke Skywalker (QB) - Texas A&M
Wow! A pair of teammates going in the first round. There have been frequent reports that Owen and Luke didn't always get along in the locker room, so it's good they're getting some distance getting selected by different teams in the pros. This is a classic case of the safe pick. Sure there are flashier picks that could be made in the first round, but the high ceiling of those flashy players often comes with the risk of a low floor. No worries about that here. Luke will have a long and storied career.
Second Round
CJ (Round 2, Pick 3):
Ewok Dress Leia (RB) - Stanford
There were a lot of ways to go with this pick, but this is an important gap that needed to be filled. This is a core player that can anchor a wave and provide some flexibility to the lineup. Not a homerun, but solid.
Chris (Round 2, Pick 4):
The Second Sister (RB) - Alabama
Chris clearly wasn't expecting fEwok Dress Leia to go this early, and that forced him to reach a bit for the Second Sister. Formerly known as Trilla Suduri, the Second Sister changed her name and transferred to Alabama to become more evil.
Third Round
CJ (Round 3, Pick 5):
Black Krrsantan (LB) - Virginia Tech
Strong pick here. An absolute beast of a tackler, he has speed and technique to hunt quarterbacks or to drop back back into coverage. Amazing strength, but some have questioned his coachability. Freelances a bit too much and can get caught out of position instead of trusting his teammates.
Chris (Round 3, Pick 6):
Cad Bane (S) - University of Central Florida
Bane developed a reputation as a bit of a dirty player, but that can be a good thing at the next level. Hard hitter who almost always puts his man down. Many analysts had a first round grade on Bane, but his advanced age caused teams to pass in the earlier rounds.
Fourth Round
CJ (Round 4, Pick 7):
Tessek (WR) - Coastal Carolina
This guy has the best hands in the draft, never dropping anything. Smart player, clean route runner. Knows where he is supposed to be on the field. Had some character concerns in college and was suspended for fighting with teammates. Projects to have a similar career to Yakface or Bib Fortuna.
Chris (Round 4, Pick 8):
Senni Tonnika (CB) - University of Southern California
This isn't the first time Sennia Tonnika has been drafted. In fact, she's been drafted every year since 1995, but has never signed the contract.
This is a bit of a flier to secure her rights. If she finally does sign on the dotted line, you're getting first round talent in the fourth round.
Fifth Round
CJ (Round 5, Pick 9):
TPM Tatooine Anakin (QB) - Arizona State
This kid has all the potential in the world, but he's too young, too small, and lacks discipline. Needs a lot of coaching. They would be smart to keep him behind a veteran for awhile to learn the game. Could be really special if he's developed right, but he could also be a disaster if he's forced into action without a good supporting lineup.
Chris (Round 5, Pick 10):
Velken Tezeri (K) - Marshall
This is clearly a need pick. Velken Tezeri isn't the best player left on the board at this point, but when you have a gaping hole in your lineup, sometimes you have to reach for a player to fill that need.
Sixth Round
CJ (Round 6, Pick 11):
Ownellco (DT) - Eastern Kentucky
This guy has a wide base that makes him very hard to push off the ball. He's not going to give you much in the pass rush, but he'll eat space along the line. His classmate Atheloe had a somewhat higher profile, but Ownellco has a bit more refinement to his game. Either guy would be a solid pick here.
Chris (Round 6, Pick 12):
Ki-Adi-Mundi (QB) - Wake Forest
We've seen a little bit of a trend of teams taking QB's in the same draft. It worked out for the Commanders with Kirk Cousins. Scouts love Ki's bubble. He's reportedly a good locker room presence and popular with his teammates. Projects as a game manager at the next level, but can win a game or two coming off the bench.
Seventh Round
CJ (Round 7, Pick 13):
Admiral Raddus (C) - Navy
Love everything about this guy. Great motor. Smart and aggressive. The kind of leader every team needs. Didn't have a chance to put much on film, but what he did was pretty spectacular. His team had some issues maintaining momentum, but I haven't heard one scout say anything bad about him. This is the kind of late round you love to see.
Chris (Round 7, Pick 14):
Snowtrooper (EDGE) - Michigan
Chris has drafted a lot of Snowtroopers over the years. A LOT of them. Some might say a veritable army of them, but if you don't get the position right, you have to keep going back to it in the draft. The Snowtrooper is Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 Bantha Skull Vintage Collection draft.
