The CZ series communication droid design is one of my favorites in the entire Saga, so I was quite excited when Hasbro released this CZ-4 figure in 2007’s 30th Anniversary Collection. Unfortunately we look at why this figure falls a frustrating smidge short of perfection in today’s Throwback Review.
In 2007, it was probably “too soon” to revisit any of the the other Lando Calrissian costumes as they had all been updated withing the previous four years, so Hasbro went outside the box to deliver us a costume Lando briefly wore at the end of The Empire Strikes Back. For today’s Throwback Review we look at Lando Calrissian in Smuggler Outfit.
The formula is simple. You take some World War II style army fatigues, add a blast helmet and a staff, and the Rebel Honor Guard is born. Despite this simplicity, Hasbro managed to punt away what could have been another cornerstone in the 30th Anniversary Collection greatness. Some of the highest collecting highs we experience in the last handful of years came during the 30th Anniversary Collection which seemed to be bursting with innovation in so many areas. No greater example is this Jango Fett figure which manages to be fresh and exciting despite featuring a character in near constant rotation.
The Expanded Universe wave of the 30th Anniversary Collection featured three figures sourced from the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars micro-series. You would have to be a pretty good negotiator to convince me that the Yoda & Kybuck figure that we review today is not far and away the most impressive of the three.
I really didn’t want review this figure today. I wanted to keep reviewing figures that I like, but I quickly realized if I didn’t start slotting in some of the 30th Anniversary Collection misses that we’d have a traffic killing run of boring figures towards the end. So without further delay, here’s 2007’s unfortunate Death Star Trooper.
This figure might be the sum of all fears original Original Trilogy purists. George Lucas continued to meddle with the Original Trilogy and for the 2004 DVD release, the Sebastian Shaw spirit was replaced by Hayden Christensen in Return of the Jedi. Today was look at the figure that represents that particular edit in 2007’s Anakin Skywalker’s Spirit.
I questioned the merits of reviewing Elis Helrot and M’iiyoom Onith back to back, but I finally decided we should binge review the two figures with the most impressive accessories in the 30th Anniversary Collection. If you thought the accessory with Elis Helrot was impressive, you will think the exact same thing with M’iiyoom Onith.
