This was Rian Johnson's original plan for the opening crawl of TLJ. It was likely shot down at the last minute by Kathleen Kennedy.
While at D23 Expo this past weekend, The Los Angeles* Times interviewed The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and asked about the movie's opening crawl.
He said he was having some difficulty writing the text of the crawl, when he got some insight into the process from a George Lucas observation, "It's like writing a haiku."
Eventually, he was asked if he had a particular word in the crawl for TLJ that he was most proud of, and said, “It would be funny if it was ‘poop’.” Rian Johnson made a poop joke! No, seriously, he made a poop joke! Once you settle down enough to continue reading the article, he eventually reveals his favorite word:
"Decimated"
Our top 3 guesses for the text, in decreasing order of probability:
"The blast from Starkiller Base left the New Republic decimated..."
"The attack by the Knights of Ren on the Jedi left the Order decimated..."
"The departure of the Chargers has left the city of San Diego decimated..."
Additionally, Rian was asked, "why people, who aren't drafted or forced, join the First Order?" He said it was a very interesting question, but it wasn't explored in his movie. He indicated that the potential appeal of the First Order is discussed among the cast and crew, but it's not something we'll find out about in TLJ.
