Coming to Netflix on June 1st (at least in the U.S.A.) is the 6 part 1988 PBS documentary Joseph Campbell and The Power of Myth. It’s a series of interviews between journalist Bill Moyers and mythologist Joseph Campbell wherein the two discuss Campbell’s life long work and passion for mythology and its ongoing importance to humanity. As most of you probably already know, Campbell was a huge influence on George Lucas. As a matter of fact, five of the six interviews that make up the series were filmed at Skywalker Ranch. I’ve seen various parts of this over the years when it has been rerun on PBS, but I’ve never sat down and watched it all the way through from start to finish. I certainly intend to rectify that soon. It’s a wonderful journey through some of the great myths, fairytales, and religious traditions the world has known; a reminder that what can be seen with the eyes or spoken of with words does not necessarily encompass all of reality. The finite points to the infinite. I encourage everyone to check it out.
Also, and I’m not trying to start anything here, but The Last Jedi is coming to Netflix on June 26th. I can’t imagine anyone who wants to see it hasn’t already bought it on video, but there you go. Oh, and the second season of The Toys That Made Us is already out. The first episode is about Star Trek and does address that franchise’s failure to corner the toy market the same way Star Wars did.
