CNBC reports that EA will definitely not be returning to the "pay to win" microtransactions model in Battlefront II. They will be continuing to update the gameplay and progression features:
Today, we're happy to announce that the Star Wars Battlefront II Progression update, which includes a complete re-design of the in-game progression system, will begin rolling out on March 21st.
And an EA spokesperson confirmed:
the changes to the game are permanent and there will be no paid micro-transactions for loot boxes going forward.
EA did say that players will be able to purchase cosmetic updates for playable characters, which runs counter to previous statements that things like a pink Vader costume went against Disney canon. Apparently EA resolved this particular issue.
Gamers should rejoice, as this may represent a seminal event in the microtransactions war. Hooray for Nerds everywhere! The money gamers save can now be redirected to buy 2300 more Sail Barges!
