“By Whatever Sun” - From a Certain Point of View

Posted by Bret on 11/21/17 at 01:45 PM Category: Books

"By Whatever Sun", by E. K. Johnston and Ashley Eckstein, comes from the perspective of Miara Larte (from the novel, Ahsoka). This story follows "The Angle."

WARNING: This is a plot summary of the short story, spoilers ahead:

Miara Larte had lost her home, scorched by the Empire. But that was nothing which had befallen her adoptive home, Alderaan. She had been a pilot, ever since she was inspired by the Rebel A-Wings that had helped some of her people escape the Empire and make it to Alderaan. She was a fighter pilot, and eventually ended up in command of a cruiser. She was young, and was sensitive to the fact that she had to be strong for her crew, and not cross the line where she grieved as if Alderaan were her original home. She struggled with that balance, trying not to offend, while also trying to lead through these difficult times. She and her crew had entered the great hall and stood at a position of honor, with other Alderaanians, at the front. She waited tensely while the hall filled. It filled with what seemed like an endless number of members of the Rebellion. Despite what could only be classified as catastrophic losses in the string of battles from Eadu, to Scarif, and here at Yavin, it was amazing to see how full the great hall was with people who had lost so much, but who continued to fight on and together.

Miara saw Leia Organa move to her position at the top of the platform. She was regal, and commanded respect. Miara could only imagine how she felt, after everything she had lost, and yet, there she stood, with a strength that could be felt throughout the room. The room was suddenly filled with a ceremonial piece of Alderaanian music. Skywalker and Solo entered, their faces indicating no nervousness. Miara assumed the Wookiee wasn't nervous at all. The three walked past the all the members of the Rebellion to the steps, where they were greeted by Leia. Miara watched as the ceremony unfolded, noting the smirks and smiles between the group. The blue astromech waddled in for a closer look, and the group laughed. Leia's smile was genuine, not the typically political smile that usually hid her true feelings. It was a relief for everyone. The trio turned, and the Wookiee roared, unleashing everyone's emotions as they cheered loudly. Everyone in the room deserved it. There would be time, maybe just a little, to celebrate, before the inevitable evacuation. The fight would continue, by whatever sun Miara might wake up the next morning.
