Original Review, 2009, by Bret:

Of the 3 resculpts in the wave, this was the one I was most anticipating. At first glance, he looks phenomenal. But he’s got some issues.

First off, the overall sculpt is excellent, as is the paint job, complete with battle damage (both painted AND sculpted). The helmet is highly detailed and looks fantastic. Now, his head seems small to me, which is funny, considering the first Cody suffered the same problem. Of course, technically, the clone should be smaller than he looks, because the armor is pretty much depicted as skin tight, but it actually looks to scale - which in turn makes it look wierd .

Anyway, cody’s got grey hair along the side of his head. He’s got tons of articulation with bj head, shoulders, elbows, knees, ankles, chest and HIPS (didn’t know that, did you?). Only his wrists are swivel. The left leg on my figure is slightly warped.

He grips the rifle well in one or both hands. His backpack doesn’t really fit tightly on his back, at least with my sample. The slightest touch will send it falling off. He comes with Obi-Wan’s saber hilt, and what appears to be a hole in his belt for it. Unfortunately the hole is too small for the nub on the hilt, so it doesn’t fit. Sucks. The Sidious holo that also comes with the figure isn’t screen accurate. Instead of a disc that Cody can hold in his palm the holo seems to come out of a candlestick looking thing, that cody grips in such a way to make it look like some kind of dessert cone. You can arrange it so Cody holds it more like in the movie, but he doesn’t hold it too tightly. Of course, once you get it to sit right in his hand, the backpack will fall off, where it can sit on the table next to Obi-Wan’s hilt that he can’t hold.

Anyway, this is a lot of stuff going on, and some is pulled off well, and some sucks bad. It’s like they tried too hard, and fell short. I’m not a huge fan, but I’ve seen a lot worse.

Updated Review from 4/10/18, by Bret

Editors Note:  This Updated Review is from the TVC figure, VC19 Clone Commander Cody.  That figure is a slightly (but noteworthy) updated version of this TLC figure.  While the standard gallery images above are of this BD44 figure, we did not bother taking new diorama pics, but instead reposted those images used for the superior VC19 figure.

This is an excellent figure to this day, while the nits still hold true.  The positives are strong:  quality sculpt (complete with gouges and scratches in the armor), well done paint applications, a variety of accessories. And sufficient articulation.  This figure has room for improvement:  the clone head sculpt isn’t great, and the paint isn’t sharp, especially the hair; Obi-Wan’s lightsaber hilt doesn’t fit in the peg hole on Cody’s belt; the hologram should spring forth from a disc for the palm of Cody’s hand, not attached to something akin to a candlestick holder; the helmet and backpack fit too loosely.  Also, I may be wrong, but I believe Cody actually fought on screen at Utapau with the DC-15A blaster, but he comes with the longer DC-15.

Added 1/14/19, by Bret

This figure was updated when re-released as VC19.  The antenna was painted silver, the ammo belt was flipped correctly, and the plastic used has seemed to resist yellowing over time.  We gave the VC19 figure a score of 7, as there is room for significant improvement.  This BD44 figure gets a 6.

Build-A-Droid

Clone Commander Cody contains the left arm of YVH-1, a battle droid developed to help fight against the Yuuzhan Vong.  Source:  New Jedi Order - (Legends).

Verdict:  Re-sculpt (low priority)

If you are looking for the best Commander Cody, you’ll want to go for the Vintage Collection VC19 version.  However, you’ll have to shell out more for that figure on ebay.  You can score this slightly inferior version for about $30 on ebay.  You’ll likely pay over $40 for the TVC figure.  In addition to the minor negatives listed above, the figure could also benefit from ball-jointed wrists.  A better head, fitted helmet, bj wrists, a DC-15A blaster, secured backpack, a disc-style projector, and maybe some Utapau dirt painted on the armor would make this deserving character an ultimate version.  If all that is achieved, adding in an alternative Phase I helmet could make this figure legendary.  A minor resculpt is warranted, but priority is probably low as of this writing.

Verdict Guide:
Re-sculpt = The figure is not definitive, and a new version should be developed.
Re-issue = This version is definitive (or close enough), and shows sufficient secondary market demand to warrant a straight repack.
No Action = This release does not require new attention.
