“Death Star Droid” was the name given to the silver vac-metallized protocol droid in the Kenner line.  As with at least 70% (scientifically measured and proven) of Kenner figures, it was wrong.  The protocol droid that was actually seen on the Death Star passing in front of the disguised heroes waiting for the elevator to the detention block was a metallic black.  The figure was really meant to be the one that can be spotted on board the Sandcrawler.  That droid was actually more golden.  So what’s with the silver one?  We’ll get to that another day.

This droid is the true Death Star Droid.  It was first offered as a POTF2 Fan Club exclusive, in standard 5POA.  But the figure still looked pretty cool because it was vac-metallized. This build-a-droid figure Is painted with a somewhat dulled finish, but still looks great.  It’s also nicely articulated, although it lacks ankles.  This, as usual, negates, for the the most part, the existing lower body articulation.  Unless you’re looking for a figure to sit in a chair, IT NEEDS ANKLES.  I don’t understand why collector’s ever say that ankles aren’t necessary.  YOU CAN’T POSE THE FIGURE UNLESS IT HAS HIPS, KNEES, AND ANKLES.  To be missing any of those articulation points makes it useless.

Anyway, rant aside, I still like this figure.  It has all the other articulation needed, it’s painted well, and it looks awesome at home in a Death Star scene.  It gets a decent 7/10 for nostalgia, even though it really should be a subpar 6 because of the missing ankles.
