Sora Bulq was on of the over 200 Jedi to be called to action by Mace Windu in a rescue mission to Geonosis, which had the surprising effect of launching the Clone Wars. Bulq survive the initial battle in Petranaki Arena, and was a member of the survivor’s circle when Dooku called a ceasefire. He was then rescued by Yoda and the clone troopers. He boarded a Republic Gunship along with Eeth Koth (who was elsewhere in the arena at the time of the ceasefire) and Tarados Gon. That gunship was soon shot down while on the way to join the main battle. Tarados Gon was killed in the crash. When Republic forces returned to assist, Bulq was left for dead, while Koth was rescued. Bulq had a long and twisty backstory in the old EU, which included him eventually succumbing to the dark side and joining Count Dooku as an acolyte. He eventually was killed near the end of The Clone Wars by Quinlan Vos.
The Saga Collection was the first Hasbro line to emerge following the “end” of the Skywalker Saga. It sought to put forth characters from all 6 films, as well as various EU media. There are several gems in the line that hold up fairly well today. One of them is Weequay Jedi Master Sora Bulq
The sculpt of this figure is outstanding. The head/face, in particular, is extremely well done. The face is highly detailed, with an excellent Weequay sculpt. The hair/braiding is also well done, and looks great It is made of a bit of a soft plastic, so that the movement of the head is not hindered, as is often the case with characters that have long hair. The body is more or less a standard Jedi sculpt, except for one major flaw: the figure lacks articulated knees. In an effort to make up for this, the legs have been pre-posed into an action stance. It’s all kinds of terrible by today’s standards. The figure does look good, but posing options are very limited. The upper body does have what we expect, with otherwise full articulation. Sora can perform a convincing THWG, and can wield the lightsaber in either hand assuredly.
Like all figures from The Saga Collection in 2006, Sora Bulq came with a stand with his name on it (which I can’t seem to find, so it is not pictured), as well as either a red or blue character hologram. (The silver ones were from the “Galactic Hunt” chase figures.). It was a bit of a silly pack-in, but some suckers (like me) bought several unnecessary duplicate figures in order to “collect them all.” Idiots (like me)!
Despite the fact that this figure is from 2006, it is almost perfect, if not for pre-posed legs. It’s a real bummer. Because of this, I have a hard time giving it the baseline 7 for a collector grade figure. If it had knees, it would be an easy 8. If it had a hilt and a robe, it would likely be a 9. As such, I give it a disappointing 6.
Verdict: Re-sculpt (VERY low priority)
This figure is good enough for your display, but the lack of ball jointed knees is almost a killer. There’s almost negligible priority here, but if Hasbro ever found some reason to put this character out there again, they would really need to give him knees. Beyond that, an unlit hilt and robe would be nice additions.
Verdict Guide:
Re-sculpt = The figure is not definitive, and a new version should be developed.
Re-issue = This version is definitive (or close enough), and shows sufficient secondary market demand to warrant a straight repack.
No Action = This release does not require new attention.
