It’s fitting that this figure originates from Geonosis because I’m more confused than C3PO with a Battle Droid body (boy that was a good gag). When this figure was first announced for the return of the Legacy Collection, it was billed simply as a “Geonosian Warrior” indicating an army builder. Fans groused because the head sculpt shown was the specific cycloptic mold that belonged to Sun Fac. According to the Sun Fac page on Wookieepedia, “Sun Fac’s right eye had either been sealed shut or [is] entirely missing.”
When Sun Fac was first released in 2006’s Saga Collection, the mold reflected that deformity. Having such a specific feature on what was billed as an army builder would not be ideal. The Legacy Collection line was ultimately canceled, but some of the figures were resurrected in this Amazon exclusive wave of six Build-A-Droid figures. The Geonosian Warrior is one of those resurrected figure, but the final release is named Sun Fac, which would match that first head sculpt shown. BUT THIS RELEASE HAS BOTH EYES. I have no idea what’s going on. I can say that despite the ocular inaccuracy, the figure’s vestments are a dead ringer for Sun Fac’s.
Binocular vision issues aside, I seriously can’t stand the lower body on all Geonisian releases we get now. I’m not sure when the super articulated legs first appeared in the evolution of the Geonisian Warrior mold. I think it may have been in 2009’s Geonosis Arena 2-Pack. All I know is that there’s some Rubik’s Cube like series of twists and turns of the joints that results in something resembling a non-ridiculous standing position. I think I unlocked that mystery once in the late 2010. I have since forgotten that magical combination. Even when using a stand, this sculpt has a tendency to topple over particularly when displayed with the heavy sonic blaster accessory. For that reason, the Geonosians are permanently retired from my display. With this particular figure, ever non-action pose I achieved makes it seem like Sun Fac suffers from rickets.
Despite the faults I find with the legs, I admit I have to admire the detail and decoration of the figure. Previous releases of Geonosians have had a muted color pallet on their adornments. This version of Sun Fac is brightly decorated with multiple paint applications and a wash to bring out every detail of the sculpt. That effort keeps from totally trashing this figure. This is definitely a worthwhile upgrade to the 2006 figure. 6 out of 10.
